As President Obama continues to roll out his executive actions, Representative Chris Van Hollen reminds us that it does not let Congress off the hook for refusing to takes necessary steps to keep the American people safe from gun violence.

"We have effective, lifesaving strategies at hand, and our communities and the law enforcement officers charged with keeping them safe are at greater risk with each passing day that Congress sits on its hands."

"Congress' refusal to curb gun sales is a national disgrace

Maryland has some of the strongest gun safety laws in the country, and I'm proud to have helped enact lifesaving reforms during my time in Annapolis."

Professor Daniel Webster of the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Policy and Research will be on Maryland Morning tomorrow at 9 AM to discuss how stronger enforcement of Maryland's gun safety laws can help further reduce the gun deaths in our state. Professor Webster is one of the country's leading experts on gun policy, and we are fortunate to have him here. President Obama even quoted Professor Webster's studies on background checks and licensing in his speech discussing the administrations executive actions, "In fact, we know that background checks make a difference. After Connecticut passed a law requiring background checks and gun safety courses, gun deaths decreased by 40 percent -- 40 percent. Meanwhile, since Missouri repealed a law requiring comprehensive background checks and purchase permits, gun deaths have increased to almost 50 percent higher than the national average. One study found, unsurprisingly, that criminals in Missouri now have easier access to guns."

'SHARE' and 'LIKE' to encourage more Marylanders to hear the invaluable research that supports Maryland's common-sense gun policies.
