Toddler in S.C. Finds Gun In BackSeat He's Riding & Shoots Grandmother (800 hits)
ROCK HILL, S.C. (WBTV) – A 24-year-old woman has been charged with unlawfully carrying a pistol after a toddler got the gun inside a car and shot his grandmother in the back.
Daisha Adawn Ervin, the young boy’s great-aunt, was arrested Thursday and charged in the case. Ervin reported stored her .357 revolver in the pouch on the back of the passenger seat of her vehicle. Ervin is the registered owner of the gun, according to reports.
The arrest warrant says the placement of the gun near the toddler gave him access to the weapon before the shooting.
According to police, officers were called to the 1100 block of Stanley Drive Sunday afternoon around 1:24 p.m.
While Ervin was driving, the young boy found a .357 revolver in the pouch on the back of the passenger seat. He then accidentally shot his 40-year-old grandmother through the passenger seat.
“She’s probably lucky that it hit the car seat first because it slowed down the momentum of the bullet,” said Rock Hill Police Captain Mark Bollinger.
The family was traveling through the light at Ogden Road and Heckle Boulevard when Ervin heard the gun go off.
She looked in the back seat and the boy had the gun in both hands and began to cry. That’s when the grandmother said she’d been hit by the bullet in the back.
WBTV has also learned the 2-year-old was not in his car seat when the incident happened Sunday.
His grandmother, whose name has not been released, is recovering. Ervin’s bond was set at $3,000. http://wncn.com/2015/10/15/great-aunt-char... Great aunt charged after SC toddler shoots grandmother in back
This week a 2-year-old in South Carolina found a gun in the back seat of the car he was riding in and accidentally shot his grandmother, who was sitting in the passenger seat. This type of thing happens from time to time: A little kid finds a gun, fires it, and hurts or kills himself or someone else. These cases rarely bubble up to the national level except when someone, like a parent, ends up dead.
People are being shot by toddlers at least once a week this year. A Washington Post analysis revealed 43 incidents this year where someone was shot by a child three or younger — that's nearly one shooting a week. http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonkblo...
