Jeanette and Alexander Toczko were only eight-years-old when they first laid eyes on one another in elementary school. The young pair married years later in 1940, and have rarely left each other’s side ever since.
KGTV reports that the couple had previously told their children that they wanted to one day die in each other’s arms.
Just last month at their home in San Diego, days before their 75th wedding anniversary, their dream was fulfilled and documented by their daughter, Aimee Toczko-Cushman.
“My dad carried around a picture of my mother in her holy communion outfit in his wallet,” said Toczko-Cushman. “Their hearts beat as one from as long as I can remember.”
Alexander, who was 95, suffered a broken hip after taking a bad fall. His health worsened shortly after and he soon became bedridden. Jeanette, 96, soon fell ill as well. KGTV reported that a local hospice then began providing them with care beds so they could lie next to one another.
“Jeanette kept asking us, ‘What is today, what is today?'” said Toczko-Cushman. “We said it was June. She said it’s June 29th, and June 29th is their 75th wedding anniversary.”
The entire family went along with it, and even went as far as buying balloons and flowers to help Jeanette and Alexander celebrate this big milestone.
“My mother was thrilled to death because it was their anniversary and she knew that he was going and that they had made it to 75 years,” said Toczko-Cushman.
Alexander passed away on June 17 and Jeanette said to him, “Wait for me, I’ll be there soon.”
The family left her alone and about 24 hours later, Jeanette joined her husband.
Last Monday morning, relatives and family held a joint funeral mass and 75th wedding anniversary ceremony in the Toczkos’s honour.
