COLLEGE PARK, GA (CBS46) - A 15-year-old boy shot by his mother in College Park has died. According to College Park police, the incident occurred in the 3100 block of Godby Road around 8 p.m.
Police said Latoya Tilson, 33, tried to break up a fight in front of an apartment on Godby Road between her 15-year-old son, Pierre, and another teen Saturday night. According to officers, when things turned ugly Tilson grabbed a gun and started shooting. Both boys were struck with bullets. Pierre was hit in the head. The 17-year-old boy was shot in the buttocks.
The high school freshman died Monday.
Neighbors we spoke with can't believe his mom is now facing several felony charges. "I'm sure her grief is unsurpassable. But I mean, it shocked the whole community. Because there are a lot of children out. There are a lot of parents. I'm a mother, so I can only imagine the devastation that she is feeling as well," said Leslie Brooks.
"I just think its really sad. I just think there's another way that the situation could have been handled. I feel that maybe the police could have been called a little sooner to have the situation die down. But to pull out a gun, as a mother into a children's situation, I just think it's really sad," said Brooks.
Tilson was already facing several charges including aggravated assault, family violence, reckless conduct, cruelty to children and use of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Other charges are pending.
Tilson waived her first court appearance. Her next hearing will take place on April 20.
