According to WGHP, Angelou had been reportedly battling health problems.

She recently canceled a scheduled appearance of a special event to be held in her honor.

Angelou was set to be honored with the “Beacon of Life Award” at the 2014 MLB Beacon Award Luncheon on May 30 in Houston.

Her poem "Black Family Pledge" still remains a favorite of mines, because I am looking forward to the day that the black family can be united once again. Where there will be a rejoice in the land, inspiring a new song.

Angelou's son Guy Johnson said in a statement:

"Her family is extremely grateful that her ascension was not belabored by a loss of acuity or comprehension. She lived a life as a teacher, activist, artist and human being. She was a warrior for equality, tolerance and peace. The family is extremely appreciative of the time we had with her and we know that she is looking down upon us with love."
