Job market tight for newly licensed Nurses especially in hospitals (990 hits)


Less newly licensed registered nurses (NLRNs) are starting their careers in a hospital setting and some are even reporting problems finding jobs, but experts say the future is still bright for the profession as a whole. “I think that the biggest reason is that they are having more difficulty getting positions in hospitals,” says Christine T. Kovner, PhD, RN, FAAN. “But I view it as positive that nurses are going into other settings.”

Kovner is the lead author of the new study, “Changing Trends in Newly Licensed RNs” published in the February 2014 edition of the American Journal of Nursing. Study authors have been following a group of NLRNs since 2006 for a 10-year national study on work choices, turnover rates, job satisfaction and more as experienced by new nurses. The hope is that the results of the study will provide data to help prepare the healthcare workforce for the future. Using data from the initial observations of their larger study, the authors compared their original cohort to a newer set of NLRNs.
