GRAMBLING, La. - Kierro Frost made the game-winning basket with seven seconds left as Alcorn State University edged out Grambling State, 78-77, Monday night inside the Fredrick C. Hobdy Arena.
K. Frost tallied 12 points in the match while sister Tierro Frost scored a season high 39 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and three steals to lead ALCN (6-16,5-6) to its second consecutive win. Ashtin McNichols notched 16 points to join to duo in double figures.
After leading 32-30 at the break, the Lady Braves trailed by as many as seven points in the second half. A jumper by McNichols narrowed the GSU (8-14,5-6) lead down to two with 16 seconds remaining. On the following play, a steal by T.Frost rendered a turnover by GSU's Joanna Miller. With only eight seconds left on the clock, a missed layup by T.Frost set up an offensive rebound and put back for twin sister K.Frost for the win.
The Lady Braves finished the one point victory shooting 46 percent from the field, 50 percent from three point range and an effective 82 percent from the line.
Joanna Miller scored a team best 35 points to lead the Lady Tigers. Miller shot 12-23 from the floor, going 6-of-7 from the line. Dennisha Chambers added 12 points and Victoya Ricks tallied 10 to round out the double digits for GSU. Alabama State 69, @Arkansas-Pine Bluff 51 BOX SCORE Pine Bluff, Ala. - Alabama State University seized a 69-51 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Monday night at the H.O. Clemmons Arena.
With the win, ASU impoved to 10-12 overall and 3-8 in the SWAC.
Three players scored in double figures for ASU. Nakiya Smith earned a team best 16 points in the win while Ashunte Smith registered 13 points and Kalya Tucker added 12.
The Lady Hornets shot 38 percent from the field and 33 percent from behind the arc in the first half to take a 35-24 lead at the break. ASU led by as many as 25 points in the second set of minutes before Jamicia Lewis scored a layup with only eight seconds remaining to close out the victory with an 18 point gap.
Christina Lasane tacked on a game-high 17 points to pace UAPB (3-18,2-9), shooting 7-of-14 from the floor. Southern 70, @Jackson State 55 BOX SCORE JACKSON, Miss. - After suffering its first conference loss last week, Southern University have responded with back-to-back wins including a 70-55 victory over Jackson State, Monday inside the Lee E. Williams Athletic and Assembly Center.
SU was led by Jasmine Jefferson's double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds along with Kendra Coleman's 13. Adrian Sanders tacked on 12 for the Lady Jaguars, shooting perfectly from the line.
After shooting 36 percent from the field and 61 percent from the charity stripe in the first half, the Lady Jaguars went on to secure a comfortable lead over JSU at halftime, 39-23.
In the final minutes of the game, SU's Yasmin Fuller and Sanders connected on set of free-throws to secure the win.
Alisa Ross led JSU (9-12,7-4) with 20 points, going 10-of-15 from the free throw line while Ayanna Lynn had 10.
