NATION OF ISLAM'S ANNUAL SAVIOUR'S DAY CONVENTION TO BE HELD IN DETROIT (2832 hits)

CHICAGO - Excitement is growing with the countdown to the Nation of Islam’s annual Saviours’ Day Convention to be held Feb. 20-23 in the Motor City.
The theme for this year’s keynote address to be delivered by the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan is “How Strong is Our Foundation: Can We Survive?” His address will be delivered at the Joe Lewis Arena Feb. 23 with doors opening at 12 noon and the program starting at 2 p.m. EST. The Joe Lewis Arena is located at 19 Steve Yzerman Drive in Detroit.

The convention marks the 84th year of the Nation of Islam’s existence in North America, which started in Detroit. Thousands, including international guests and participants, will make the pilgrimage and enjoy four days of informative workshops, spiritual renewal, fellowship and networking.

Saviours’ Day events will kick off Thursday evening, Feb. 20, with a simulcast of Dr. Ava Muhammad’s popular talk show “Elevated Places” in the Cobo Center’s Grand Ballroom. The public is invited to be a part of the live studio audience as panelists discuss “Muhammad’s Economic Blueprint For Ending Poverty and Want.”

The Cobo Center, located in downtown Detroit at the corner of Washington Blvd. and East Jefferson, will be the main convention site. Activities this year will include plenary sessions, workshops, the Nation’s yearly and legendary Drill Competition, Nation of Islam First Lady Khadijah Farrakhan’s Children’s Village as well as an Art and Essay Contest. Special sessions are planned for youth and young adults and the weekend will include fun events and entertainment. A screening of the documentary “The Trials of Muhammad Ali” is also scheduled.

Each year the convention, often called the Crowning Event of Black History Month, marks the birth of the founder of the Nation of Islam, Master W. Fard Muhammad, who started teaching in Black Bottom Detroit in 1930, and commissioned the Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad with the mission of raising Black people in America.

The last time Saviours’ Day was held in Detroit, Min. Farrakhan delivered a rousing message of unity and responsibility after recovering from an intense 14-hour surgery in the first week of January 2007. Over 40,000 people attended the Saviours’ Day keynote address in 2007.
