Al Sharpton’s statement on the George Zimmerman verdict and his plans for justice: “The acquittal of George Zimmerman is a slap in the face to the American people but it is only the first round in the pursuit of justice. We intend to ask the Department of Justice to move forward as they did in the Rodney King case and we will closely monitor the civil case against Mr. Zimmerman. “I will convene an emergency call with preachers tonight to discuss next steps. From Eurweb.com Another update: The NAACP, the nation’s oldest civil rights organization, saw a massive, instant response to a petition Saturday night urging the Department of Justice to open a civil rights case against George Zimmerman, who was cleared of all criminal charges in the shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. The petition gained more than 115,000 signatures in about three hours, NAACP spokesman Eric Wingerter told BuzzFeed. The appeal asks Attorney General Eric Holder to “address the travesties of the tragic death of Trayvon Martin by acting today” and press civil rights charges against Zimmerman, who shot an unarmed Martin last February in what he said was an act of self-defense.Source We signed the petition. Will you do the same? Original story posted below: The NAACP was “outraged” when they heard the the not-guilty verdict in the George Zimmerman murder trial. Due to the decision, the NAACP is calling on the Department of Justice to prosecute Zimmerman for shooting Trayvon Martin. The NAACP left this statement about the verdict: “We are outraged and heartbroken over today’s verdict,” NAACP President Benjamin Jealous said in a statement. “We will pursue civil rights charges with the Department of Justice, we will continue to fight for the removal of Stand Your Ground laws in every state, and we will not rest until racial profiling in all its forms is outlawed,” Jealous said. ABC News reported: A civil rights probe had previously been opened by the Department of Justice and a spokeswoman said the department would continue to “evaluate the evidence generated during the federal investigation, as well as the evidence and testimony from the state trial.” Other reports state that the Obama administration is making steps to charge George Zimmerman in a civil rights case in regards to Trayvon Martin’s murder. Obama Administration has taken the steps needed to file federal charges, thus sidestepping the well established double jeopardy, against Zimmerman. Unidentified sources within the Administration have confirmed that Obama, and Justice Eric Holder at the Department of Justice have filed charges against Zimmerman for “violating Trayvon Martin’s civil rights”. The rule merely states that an individual cannot be tried twice for the same crime in the SAME COURT. Liberal Justice Department officials often charge Americans with crimes from which they have previously been acquitted by filing federal charges on a similar crime in a federal court. Source The facts are: Zimmerman shot and killed Martin in Sanford on Feb. 26, 2012. Zimmerman, 29, maintains he shot Martin, 17, in self-defense, while the state argued that Zimmerman “profiled” Martin and concluded he was a criminal. As we all know, this case took on racial overtones after police declined to charge Zimmerman, who is white and Hispanic. Martin was black.
