To Marry Or Not To Marry? Does Dad Have a Say? (1206 hits)

A recent article from Black Enterprise tells the story of a young man, Steve, who upon asking his girlfriend’s father for her hand in marriage was asked to reveal items such as his credit score, medical records and bank statements.
Not sure whether to be appreciative or upset, Steve provided the requested information, fortunately with a clean record. However, what would have happened if he could not? Author Kenny Pugh writes,
“Consider this, as a father you have provided and protected your daughter for 18+ years so she can experience the best that life has to offer. Why would you extend your marriage approval to someone who hasn’t confirmed his ability to provide, support, protect and care for your daughter?”
While Pugh understands the intent behind her father’s actions, he’s not completely in agreement with how it was done. He adds that although a father should trust his daughter to make sound decisions, he doesn’t doubt that love can sometimes blind a person from making clear choices.

BMWK– Do you think her father was asking for too much or do you believe he was justified in wanting to further investigate his daughter’s potential husband?
About the author
Stacie Bailey is a recent graduate of Quinnipiac University with a master’s degree in Interactive Communications. She has strong interests in relationships, health, social media and an overall love for sharing knowledge and information.
This is how it works in our Family, "Baby Gurl" and our future children will be schooled properly on how to deal in da world and to access people's motives.
Ultimately they will have the strength and wisdom hopefully to choose the best mate possible according to their standards or expectations.
We insist that they make a written list of attributes and expectations..... Saint calls that the vision paradigm before execution or selection process.
Now Saint aka "Daddy" has to interview the boyzs and gurl's lightly.... I don't need to use heavy-handed tactics displayed by this Father. It's the gift of conversation that will elicit information in a smooth manner.
I was interviewed by Janelle's father first followed by her mother.
My father interviewed Janelle first and fell-in-love with her followed by my mother.... my father has a gift of sizing people-up quickly!
So encourage your children to be strong, independent, however ask for a second opinion to validate your choice!
