DEAR GARDENERS: HOW TO GROW YOUR OWN CABBAGE PATCH (1674 hits)
April 2013 Dear Gardeners:
It's Spring!
However, with all this cold, and warm, rain and chilly kinds of weather you might question it. Yet, it is Springtime! I was seriously looking at a wonderful article today on growing your own cabbage patch. You know if you are vegetable gardener you can assure others new gardeners how easy it can be. It requires a little preparation though. I'm sure you know you'll have to till the area, fertilize and prepare it for your cabbage plants. The rest is spacing them, placing them in the soil and adding water.
You can choose how big or small you want your cabbage patch, and even how many cabbages you'll want to harvest. Early Spring after the last frost is the best time to get to the garden store and get your cabbage plants. Of course, if your experienced enough you can buy seeds and plant them too. Most garderners I think prefer buying the plants. I think that I would.
The article I read suggests that planting time of cabbage should be done while it's still a little cool outside with around 6 hours of sun a day. You can also plant 2 or 3 different variety of cabbage as well. Tips also included watering well, mulch and compost and a clean garden. Keep a watchful eye for insects who also adore feeding on your cabbages so you may want to help prevent that with a good dust, or safe go green sprays. You can also give them a nice dose of plant food to keep them vibrate and healthy.
At harvest time make sure your cabbage is full in the middle and you can either cut them off at the near root, or dig them and cut the roots off. Soon you'll washing and cooking your own home-grown cabbage dishes! That's smells delcious! Got some time saving tips!
Share.
I'll end this letter with a blessing for your cabbage patch.
"You're such a doll", ... if you know what I mean?
I think we're safely past the frost Irma. Wish I had room for a garden, cabbage is one of my favorites.

Irma Girl you forgot the cabbage seeds? LOL! I know you're and experienced gardener and you can grow things from the seed in your veggie garden. I wish I could do that, but I will have to have the plants they're much easier for me. I'm so lazy this spring, and with having those water drainage woes, I'm just wanting that all behind me. It will be over in a few more days and then, I may start fixing up my blooming plants for a summer porch.
YOU ASKED ABOUT GROWING ROSES: THIS THROW BACK LETTER FROM LAST YEAR MAY HELP:
WISH I COULD TASTE THOSE STRAWBERRIES!

How much sun do they need Miisrael? I've got too much in the front and too little in the back.

Steve, they need at least 6 hours of sunlight daily. If you have an area where they could get possible 3 in the morn and 3 to 4 in the eve, they'll probably thrive. Since you only would want a few heads of cabbage you would not need a large area to grow. Cabbages can even grown in large pots if they have enough room to spread a bit. You might give it some thought for a first time try. Think about it and then just try it and see.
