Trying to purchase a new cell phone? Save up for college? If you’re young and in New York, you should be glad to know the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) application process began last week.
For over 30 years, SYEP has offered summer job opportunities to eligible candidates between the ages of 14-24.
The program will run for seven weeks from July 5 to August 18 and candidates will be paid $7.25 per hour. Candidates’ wages are placed on a fee free ATM card to eliminate the need to cash paper checks.
Worksite locations vary throughout the city and are usually nonprofits or local businesses, such as camps or hospitals. Private sector jobs with Best Buy and CVS Pharmacies were available last year.
This year, worksite locations in Chinatown include Chinatown ManPower Project, Inc., Chinese-American Planning Council, and Henry Street Settlement.
The deadline to apply and submit your application is May 18. For more information, call (800) 246-4646 or click here.
Shirley Lew was an SYEP applicant in her teens and has worked for Chinatown YMCA and the Port Authority of NY and NJ in the World Trade Center.
