Protesters and people who hope to get a seat inside the courtroom are gathering ahead of today’s landmark same-s*x marriage appeal at the U.S. Supreme Court. Beginning at roughly 10 a.m. ET, the justices will hear arguments in the appeal of a federal appeals court panel’s decision that struck down California's Proposition 8, which defines marriage as between a man and a woman.
The court could uphold the California law and leave it up to states to decide the issue of same-s*x marriage. Or it could overturn the California law and also extend that ruling to the other 29 states that have added a same-s*x marriage ban to their constitutions. The arguments are expected to last about an hour. On Wednesday, the court will hear arguments in the appeal of lower court decisions that struck down provisions in the Defense of Marriage Act, which restrict federal benefits to same-s*x couples. Rulings are expected the week of June 24 at the latest, but the c ourt could issue them at any time after argument. Prop 8 supporters, opponents weigh in on debate ahead of hearings The controversial fight over same-s*x marriage in California will finally get a day at the U.S. Supreme Court, with a landmark hearing Tuesday morning. By Lawrence Hurley
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - America's top court takes up the delicate and divisive issue of gay marriage on Tuesday when the nine Supreme Court justices consider the legality of a California ballot initiative that limits marriage to opposite-s*x couples.
Tuesday will be the first of two days of oral arguments on the issue. On Wednesday, the court will consider the 1996 federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which limits the definition of marriage to opposite-s*x couples.
Rulings in both cases are expected by the end of June.
In what is scheduled to be about three hours of deliberations with lawyers over the two days, the justices will have their say on what gay activists see as a key civil rights issue reminiscent of famous Supreme Court cases of the past, including Loving v. Virginia, a 1967 case in which the court invalidated bans on interracial marriage.

Do you know if California has ever considered breaking that big State into a smaller State say North Calif and Southern Calif? It seems that it's too, big to manage by one Gov. Maybe that would help. Probably not, because I don't see the Fed Govt divvying out separate dollars if they break the Cali into two.

I don't listen to the news as much as I read about it online. I believe Gay marriage will be passed since Canada has had it legal there since the early 2000's. I still don't know why this has to go to the High court though. I feel that this matter should be kept at a State level.
