Just Because One Can, Should He? Docs Deliver Newborn (Although Parents Died in Car Accident) via C-Section and the baby soon meets the fate of his parents. I totally understand that life is precious and that medical people are trained to preserve human life at all cost! I really get it since I'm a medical person myself. However, as a person of faith I understand that theres serious wisdom lacking in the medical world.
Docs went over and beyond to preserve this newborn's life, but in hindsight (which is 20/20) did they stop to ponder the consequences of a baby living through the tragedy of being an orphan not having his mother to suckle him with her breast milk, love, and warmth? Comment on the blog re: your answers to the questions? 1. Do you think Docs should have delievered the child (in the first place)
and
2. Do you think it was the child's fate to die with his parents?

To the first question, yes. The doctors tried to save a life, that is their job.
To the second question, no. I don't believe it was fate. The doctors tried and failed. That sometimes is the case, doctors do not have unlimited powers.
As far as the child would be an orphan, the child still deserved the doctors' efforts to preserve its life.
That's a very interesting point, Steve. What brought you to your answer as to the life of the child living without his parents? I'd like to know if its your experience as a parent or whether it is some deeper conviction.
well in a professional capacity; It would be my responsibility to preserve life. If there was any chances the baby could have survived this terrible ordeal, the child at least will have life... Would it be the best quality of life would be my concern, if special needs are required I am certain someone whom has a whole lot of love to give to a child... WE provide those essential needs like comfort love and protection.
I would hate to have to be the one on the receiving end of this ordeal. a sad one at that...

Jen, I think the child would be able to find a good family, provided the adoption agencies do a responsible job. There are many childless couples who would love to have an orphaned baby to make a family with.

Guys and Gals,
Thanks for your comments to this blog. However, I do note that with responsibility comes accountability which is what's lacking in many arms of our society. How many times have I seen and heard, I did my responsibility now who shall we hold accountable for the care? Is it the government? God forbid! Is it baby's aging grandparents? God forbid it! Is it left to society or the community at large? We know what happened in the parable of the "Good Samaritan" , eh!
We have laws on the book in this country that are skewed. Case in point Roe v. Wade. On one hand our govt says a woman can choose and then the law says again that docs can't assist the dying with dying. The baby was assessed and found with low heartbeat even before cutting the dead mother open. I say how long was the mother dead and the baby oxygen deprived before the baby was delivered? These are crucial questions. Delivering a baby with Severe disabilities or Anoxic Brain Injury is ethical dilemma that should not be decided because of responsibility alone, but who shall we hold Accountable is the correct question .
With that said,do you think your responses would be the same?
When this story went viral I knew automatically it was either a 'drug head' or drunk driver and Mr Acviedo will spend a longtime in jail because the Hasidim community in Williamburg and Crown Heights Brooklyn aint no joke. They have some prominent attorneys and doctors within their respective enclave.

Show you right, but what's your take on the two questions posed in the blog especially being a young father with a new baby? Hypothetically ... Would you say that your new born bundle of joy should be left on the Earth (God forbid if something happened like this while you and Janelle were on the way to the hospital) without you guys. Or do you think Docs should exercise their job responsibility and keep from law suits and cut open the dead mother to save ya'lls baby?
Would you consider it a matter of fate in either case?
It's a catch 22 if you ask me.... those liberal save life advocats vs. the moral consequences. You know a lot of doctors are trained to believe they have "gifted hands" they are blessed with the ability to save life. Honestly if I were in a position like that (which I was in with my child) I had the option of keeping him on life support... knowing full well that he would never be able to functionally enjoy life.
It was the hardest thing that I ever had to do in my life.... It depresses me to even think about it today.
Well that's an interesting question you poised. Actually if the parents are brain dead clinically the child will either die soon after or have neurological sequelae.
Perhaps the best clinical decision is not to section the women however in this nation we are very litigious.
The clinical decision should be based on the clinical reality versus defensive medicine.
Now we have to rearrange the laws in this nation.
Americans don't deal with death well and that is the problem!!!!!!
Cynthia I'm sorry for you loss, but it's ironic that you make a personal example from your own experience as a mother; Imagine having someone alive on life support for 2 years as in a vegetative state. The person has no clue they are even in the world. She was saved by the Docs, but suffered oxygen deprivation. It's sad.
How can anyone see their love one in that state let alone a newborn before their life starts With such problems .... Of course I realize that you guys by now see what side I'm earning towards.
In life, there are hard choices to be made but we to make reasonable responsible and accountable decisions that take in to account all the information thus informed decisions or educated decisions.
The problem with many Doc especially surgeons is the cross the line and think they are God... They have the God complex.
I'm sorry for your loss Cynthia. We had a close call with our 4th child. The cord got wrapped around his neck and he was without oxygen until the doctor could get it untangled. He did need special education when he was a child but you would never know it now. He just turned 28. The brain is amazing at healing itself.
Jen, I had not thought of the oxygen issue. That is a medical decision that the doctors had to make. Did they make a valid decision? I wasn't there and I'm not a doctor so I don't know.
Jen, I worked in an operating room for a couple years and many of the surgeons would explain the procedures to me as the performed them. I saw a couple things that disturbed me, like a tray of instruments used that was found to not have been sterilized only after the operation. Another time a doctor took off a leg and proceeded to pretend it was a pogo stick. So what I found with some doctors was a tendency towards callousness, and the nurse certainly failed in her duty by not checking the instruments were clean (all that takes is to make sure the tape showed they'd been through the autoclave). But I can't say I experienced a god complex from any of them. But this was the late '70s, and times change.

The problem as Saint stated was that Americans don't deal we'll with death. We all we have to face it one day; however, Americans get uncomfortable talking about life insurance, Living wills in the event they can't make decisions for themselves would you want feeding or breathing tube... Patients jump right over that.
The interesting thing about the Jewish community in question in this blog is that they believe that one has to do everything possible to save a life even if their is no hope of quality. Case in point, is Ariel Sharone, former Prime Minister still in Israel on life support?

thanks all... TRUST ME... THE BRAIN/MIND IS A REMARKABLE ORGAN!! IT FOREVER AMAZES ME! And by the Grace of God and HIS Mercy... I am here!!
