Follow me and lets both see what is going on with this What is a religion? “Religions are combinations of the grassroots practices and cultural norms of the lay believers, with the high-brow theologizing and intellectualization of the religious professionals. The two forms of a religion often struggle against each other. Folk practices are resilient to top-down declarations of what is or isn't supposed to be part of a religion, and often reforming popular beliefs results only in name-changes and other surface changes, leaving underlying practices more or less as they were. When academics codify the religion they often fail to account for - or completely ignore - the practices of the laypeople. When documenting a religion we cannot rely only on the testimonies of the masses, who might en masse be taken in by fads, nor rely only on the definitions of the professionals, academics and clerics, who only represent a small portion of believers. Therefore the only pragmatic route is to consider religions to be pluralities and umbrella terms. The grassroots of a religion is nearly always a combination of beliefs and practices from multiple historical sources. Magical thinking, ritualistic habits and popular beliefs all tend to survive within a culture even though its official religion may change. On the other hand, the formal and scholarly religion of clerics and religious professionals is complex, more complete and resilient to change. Theology is demanding to study and is frequently very convoluted because the religion's scholars debate the weakspots and difficult spots of the tenets and work out complex philosophies to circumvent them. The more difficult the area of study of a religion, the more maze-making its scholars will do in attempts to explain irrationality. But the more complex and difficult the intellectual aspect of a religion, the more the lowly masses will fail to comprehend or implement it, and the bigger the divide will be between the cultural and scholarly versions of the religion. As a Christian, I was first introduced to my Catholic Religion (taught the beliefs, practices and customs of my Catholic Religion). I learned all about the Blessed Mother of Jesus, and certain traditional rituals.
As a Christian, around 16 yrs old I became aware off spiritualness and wanted to find a religion that would allow me to grow into my spiritual self without.. all of the stigmas and regulations regarding church attire, or the gossip about who the minister is running with, which member is pregnant from this deacon! Then I followed my mother's religion, missionary baptist... awesome choir, older minister whom could preach... and I learned more about the Bible Lessons or stories. With that...
Religion is simply that; man made, man managed, and man owned.
What about strange mixes of religion, like I am Deist/Buddhist?

Irma, for me religion is about study, contemplation, action, and prayer. And this fits the original definition of the Latin word religio, which means simply conscientiousness, sense of right, moral obligation, duty. I don't practice NDB in the usual way, but I do now add nam-myoho-renge-kyo when I pray, and I don't pray with words, but will put in my mind a person and meditate. God is well aware of what I wish for that person.

uumm lemt me see how can I explain this.... I am a spiritual person. But I had to learn through Religion my understanding base to what it is I am supposed to learn about God, Spirit, Forgiveness, Compassionate... I am Culturally aware that I am of a different origin. I live my life according to the Written commandments and morals they govern.
Im noway near a holy roller, bible thumber, banging my tamborine (etc...) LOL
I ust believe that we should show love compassion understanding forgiveness and always be of good will. Adultry is a sin, killing is a sin especially in the name of God and Religion. I believe Pro Choice! Everyone is accontable for his choices and actions.. I am not the Judge.
Religion is man made and man controlled. Christianity, NBD, methodist, baptist, chatholism all religions designed by man....
but the one thing about them all is that they are supposed to teach you about the spiritual morals values and practices that we should take into our lives daily. I don't believe that you need religion to be spiritually connected to a higher power. Like NDBs Chant for peace and balance. I pray for peace, strength, balance, health, wealth, for that new BMW... LOL
I don't believe in all of the hoopla that some people say like Harry and like some others ...
And let's not forget Egyptian. Their religion was centered around the natural cycles of the universe.

The fantastic tale that God made a man "die for a hundred years" with no ill effects on his food, drink, or donkey was a Jewish fable (Sura 2:259ff.). The idea that Moses was resurrected and other material came from the Jewish Talmud (Sura 2:55, 56, 67).

Irma.. I believe that in thiss life one is supposed to live a good life. Do unto others, it's GOD's law.. but also it's law by human morality. By nature we are "evil" born of sin. But I don't have to live a sinful life. I believe in you reap what you sow ... give evil receive evil.
Moral virtues is the way of life for me. Also there are laws of Nature ... do we humans contribute to some of the mishaps of Nature... Most certainly I believe. When humans mess with nature, pollution, harvesting in our rain forests/forests/digging in our oceans for oil, destruction of Natural Habitat... I find alot of this offensive to GODs creation. Some may see it as survival.. I on the other hand then to wonder is it indeed survival or man's greed.
I for one do not like to subscribe to the ideology of things done in the name of God or Religion. Because most things are done by man because of "self interest".
As for happen stance.. Losing my job, losing a limb... homeless, things of that nature has to be taken (for me/my opinion) is what have I done to encounter this bad Karma.. Again I believe in living a life that is pleasing to God and Man. And I am accountable for my deeds good and bad. When I hear the God's Will..... Who am I to question why or whether God's pleased or displeased with me.
My religious thoughts are to try to live as good as I can towards understanding, love, forgiveness, compassion, good will towards my fellow man.
I believe that's what you are asking me; or did I miss something!
oh... and another thing... Celebrations.... I don't really celebrate Christian Holidays.... Thanksgiving and Christmas, Birthdays and Martin Luther King Holiday ... we do celebrate in my home.
No I do not celebrate Easter, but I do observe Lent (I know, don't ask me why) I don't celebrate Labor Day, Memorial Day.... but I recognize May 21st and Junteenth (my grandparents ....)
