Why the name Black Women Empowered? (841 hits)

People always ask me why I started a group called Black Women Empowered. Here is my story.

I started this group on Facebook a little over a year ago. I was watching a show on BET called " Black Girls Rock". While I was watching the show, I was also on my computer watching all the buzz and excitement of the ladies, which most were black of course. God spoke to my heart and said "what happens when all the excitement ends? Out of that came the group Black Women Empowered. We started out with just over 200 ladies. Everyday I go in the group and start off with a prayer devotion, and positive reinforcement that they are all beautiful and so much more. I did this for months, with the help of a very few. I never gave up. Honestly I don't even remember when other women started getting involved.

Why the name? Because we as Black women on a whole, have to endure much more opposition on a daily basis, than non-black women do. We have women of every ethnicity in the group. We are a Christian women's group, we make no exceptions or apologies. We are Black women empowered because in order to know where you are going, you must first acknowledge where you have been. That is the driving force to your destiny. The other reason of the name is because I want the world to know that the portrayal of us on some of the reality tv shows, makes us look like un-intelligent, un-professional angry black women, who fight with each other and tear each other down. I personally, am offended and I reject that portrayal.

We recently released our online journal. We give women a platform to share their blogs, businesses, gifts and talents.

To sum it up, we embrace all women, but we are and always will be Black Women Empowered!
