PLANS FOR BAN ON BIGGIE SIZE SODAS TO MAKE NEW YORKERS SMALLIES!! (904 hits)
YOUR NATIONAL NEWS June 2012 Day 1 New York, NY
A propsed ban would virtually affect the entire population of popular sugary drinks may be in the works. Mayor of the big apple is wanting to place a ban of oversized, or sometimes referred as "Biggie Size" sugary sodas. The sale of any cup or bottled soda in large oversized servings would be under the proposed ban of sales in stores, resturants and others including grocery and quick convienient stores.
Although Bloomberg's proposal requires approval from the Board of Health, a step that is considered him, and the board's chairman is the city's health comissioner, joined in his support of the ban. The ban would not apply to drinks with fewer than 25 calories per 8 ounce serving. Bloomberg main concern is reducing New Yorkers who have become more than half of it's population obese and overweight. Some reports has New Yorkers as the one of the fastest increasing weight gain over a 30 year period.
What do you think about banning sodas? Will it really help reduce the rate of obesity in a population setting?
I admit I used to drink a lot of soft drinks because of the energy boost it gives me. People who drink too many sugar sweetened soft drinks might be at a higher risk of developing cancer and gout later in life and I decided to stop for that reason.
Now I haven't eliminated drinking sodas completely, however I found you can get much more energy from green tea or coffee than a carbonated beverage. I am surprised more people haven't caught on to it. Green teas are readily available and taste pretty good.

I still drink cola! However, no more than 1 or two a week. Nope, can't get used to the green tea flavor either; but some regular brewed tea is fantastic served over ice!! "That's what I'm talkin about!" LOL!

@Misrael, I used hate green tea, but now I love to drink it. GT has so many uses; cancer prevention, cognitive improvement, crohn's, heart disease prevention, some STD's, Parkinson's dz prevention, stomach problems, headaches, high cholesterol, weight loss in combination products... Perhaps you should try a bit of honey and lemon or ginger to give it a nicer taste. (wink)

Also, hibiscus tea is good- especially for children. It is red like Kool-Aid and has a mild floral/fruity flavor. It's great for iced tea. It also helps with high blood pressure/cholesterol.
For those who don't like plain water, you can try infusing fruit and herbs/spices in water such as apples, peaches, berries, mint, lavender and basil then let it sit overnight. It gives it a refreshing taste... as well as nutrition.
But whatever you do, make sure you are drinking plenty of fluids and are not forgetting to stay hydrated. It is especially important for us to stay healthy during these summer months, especially those of you with blue collar jobs!
Wow! Thanks for the good information about green teas. I might give it a try. But, no promises. I do value your declarations though, and I feel you wouldn't say it good if it wasn't. I have to try ways to make it more fitting to my taste and you've both given great options. I looked a box of it yesterday, and passed it up, but maybe next time I pick some up and take it home. I have to drink my water! I don't drink enough but I set aside water days when it's all I have and nothing else.
Did I tell y'all I love you? Okay, I love you.

Great info ladies. I'm not a big pop drinker..,every once in a while, but I love ice teas and green tea is not bad. Does anyone make their own ice teas? If so, what do you put in yours?

@Hoda....I've never made any special blended teas, just with a bit of lemon most of the time. My sister tried it oranges and lime too. It was a great taste. I've also heard somewhere you can spice your teas with a sprinkle of cinimmon. Experiment a little with different citrus and fruits. You may invent something! Exciting to try huh?
@Lena : I've read about high frutose corn syrup...It is loaded into many foods we easily eat and so many things we drink daily. It does seem to be needless, but perhaps the mayor of New York is just dropping a needle in a haystick. Sooner or later someone will get stuck and feel that sting. Thanks, good advice.
