Cairo, Egypt

A 31 year old law has been lifted of its broad powers over Egypt's citizens. The law gave authority for a police force to detain and arrest anyone under government rule at any time period for no specfic reason. The detainee would remain in prision without trial dates for any extended period of and without court orders releasing them could also be ingnored by security agencies. Over a period of Mubarak's security reign the law was often abused an was considered abusive to human rights. Mubarak's regime justied the law and continued use of the law to crack down terriorism, drug trafficking and to impose speedy justice on activities deemed as threats to the national security. Today there are many detainees still held in prison for somewhat petty crimes as drinking beer, and others who have be subjected to torture under the grooling security forces who often made the law so horrid and severe. Now the law expires Egyptian paraliment are making process and plans to keep and change the law that is fair, stern, but no longer a tormentor.
