YOUR WORLD NEWS MAY 2012 15th Day UN Republic of Congo
Villagers surrounded a UN peacekeeping base in the Democratic Republic of Congo on Monday, May 14, 2012 and attacked them. At least 11 Pakistani peacekeepers were injured. The villagers were stated to been angry because they were not protected against attacks by militias. The UN condemned the attack on the peacemakers but expressed their concern of the deteriorating security, The villagers marched on the UN base in the Bunyaikiri district of South Kivu after overnight attacks on them which was reported in death of 6 people. The villagers claimed that the UN troops did nothing to defend them against the attacks. However, forces were controlled with firing because it was felt that troops firing would have caused more serious injuries and even more chaos. The protest of the villagers may have also caused by elements of a Mai-Mai group, the Rai Mutomoboki sources stated. Other than injuries, no deaths were reported among the peacekeepers.
