2012 Girls it's your year!!
Vorva and Rhiannon Tomtishen accepted the special U.N. award in New York on Thursday, February 09, 2012 for their renegade work bringing attention to the threat of palm oil production poses to orangutans and the rain forrests in Malaysia and Indonesia. Back in 2007 the two started a 5 year campaign to have Girl Scouts of USA to elimate Southeast Asian palm oil for it's cookie recipes. The ingredient is said to fuel deforrestation as trees are clear cut for palm oil production, thus leaving no habitation or less habitation for orangutans. The lobbying along with social media persuade Girl Scouts of USA and Kellogg to commit to introducing a more sustainble palm oil by 2015, which the policy was announced last fall. The organization has pledged to purchase certificates from the GreenPalm program which funds palm oil producers who follow with guidelines outlined by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil. The two girl scouts said they are trying to pressure up to ensure Girl Scouts find enviornmentally and socially responsible palm oil to be used in the cookies. In addition, the girl scouts couple has launched an on-line petition supporting Project ORANGS. The prestigious award is the first of it's kind and they are the first to receive the award which is presented from the Union of Concerned Scientists, and the U.N. Forest Heroes Award.
