While Men Slept…
It’s just a matter of time till the gently falling flakes accumulates and cause an avalanche. Just a matter of time till the collection of droplets causes the dam to break, or the river to overflow its banks. Only a matter of time till the temperature within the volcano rises to the degree that causes the lava to erupt and flow down the mountain, bringing devastation to all in its path (Diane S. Dew).
In the book of Matthew 13:25, the Bible says, “…While men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat and went his way.” Many disastrous events in History occurred while men slept.
In Sept. 12, 1759 – In Quebec, the French headquarters in Canada was under attack by Major General James Wolf of England. After the French repelled three attempts by the British, the governor felt safe and wrote a letter to a friend and said, “We are no longer concerned about the security of Quebec.” However, while men slept, the British scaled the north wall along the St. Lawrence Seaway, and at early dawn, caught the French unprepared and won the battle.
The North American continent came under the control of Britain. In 1776, the fire for American independence burned low. Several defeats were suffered in a row. But while men slept, General Washington led 2,500 men across the Delaware River at Trent, New Jersey, and swept a victory for American independence.
While men slept, the Meades and Persians entered and conquered Babylon and Belshazzar the king was slain. While men have slept, many tragedies have occurred. Fires, tornadoes, and flash floods have swept homes, and even cities, away while men slept. We need to be aware of the dangers when we sleep spiritually.
The devil understands quite well that the helplessness of man is revealed at the highest proportion while he is asleep. The biblical account of the tares being sowed among the wheat underscored the fact the devil and his agents are more active at night, when men are sleeping. The bible made us to understand that after the sewer had sowed good seed (wheat), an enemy came at night and sow bad seed (tares) along side the good. It is invariably clear that the purpose of the devil was to derail the growth and the progress of the good seed.
Principalities and powers, witches and wizards, territorial spirits, demons, and evil spirits are more ferocious at night when you are helplessly sleeping. While you sleep they plant and deposit all kinds of evil on you. This is why the bible repeatedly mentioned that we should watch and pray. On the contrary, the devil will do everything within his power to ensure you don’t wake up and pray at night. He will allow you to spend hours in front of the Television; he will provide opportunities for you to be on the computer all day and night; he will come up with diverse inconsequential activities simply to hinder you from praying, but there is always a raging battle the moment you intend to spend a little time with the Lord in prayer. The song writer says “Christians seek not yet repose, hear your guardian angel say; you are in the midst of foes, watch and pray”.
Dearly beloved, this is not the time to fold your arms and allow the devil and his agents an unrestricted access to you life affairs. You need to shake away every shackles of sin from you life and become ferocious against the devil and his agents. While others sleep at night, you are on your knee waging war against the kingdom of darkness. Remember, you are in the midst of foes; therefore “watch and pray.”
