WASHINGTON -- Defending the first war launched on his watch, President Barack Obama declared Monday night that the United States intervened in Libya to prevent a slaughter of civilians that would have stained the world's conscience and "been a betrayal of who we are." Yet he ruled out targeting Moammar Gadhafi, warning that trying to oust him militarily would be a costly mistake.
Obama announced that NATO would take command over the entire Libya operation on Wednesday, keeping his pledge to get the U.S. out of the lead - but offering no estimate on when the conflict might end. He never described the U.S.-led military campaign as a "war" and gave no details on its costs, but he offered an expansive case for why he believed it was in the national interest of the United States and allies to act.
In blunt terms, Obama said the U.S.-led response had stopped Gadhafi's advances and halted a slaughter he warned could have shaken the stability of an entire region. "To brush aside America's responsibility as a leader and - more profoundly - our responsibilities to our fellow human beings under such circumstances would have been a betrayal of who we are," Obama said. "Some nations may be able to turn a blind eye to atrocities in other countries. The United States of America is different. And as president, I refused to wait for the images of slaughter and mass graves before taking action." ...
I think under the circumstances that Pres. Obama has demonstrated leadership in the capacity that our resources both financially and physically allows. We have a weakened economy which makes it necessary that we don't go involving ourselves beyond what we are capable of.

I am over joyed that at least for me, his saying as our commander and Chief he would not take us down the bush administartion regim change route...and I am even more respectful for our president's leadership for putting it out there why we have not nor will go into Bahrian / Libya or any place else doing a repeat of what any of our former president's have done not even a democrat onw like Bill Clinton did....
that we will only go in to give aid and comfort for the whole world with the whole world's help and helping pay i money as well as lives as long as he is our president...
as one who is against any excuse for war, I am so relieved after his speech...but as expected only one commerical later FOX as expected had showed how they stillhave not heard a word of what he had said...and as on msnbx some democrats in congress back fresh from vacation is showing they heard not one word about it is up to each nation to determine their own desteny...
but, as you know Jen, this is what Democracy is all about FREEDOMS of each individual to do their own thinkings. (smile)

Jen as our middle-class are the ones who pay the bulk of our taxes...we should try to look at were we in this shape before nothing was made in America and our jobs outsourced...I doubt if we can blame war on our major problems as at least for me this did not happen until well after teh prices of gas taking away the bying powers at the markets as well as paying morgages, ect. and, besides we have not had our government stop printing money 24-7...but I will ask it the gas prices out of control in your local area??? does it go up with every little things it use to do with the Bush administartion...
but, just over look me as you know I always try to look at things from all angles. (smile)

...oops almost forgot the two main nations we do get oil from are at war...not only has this war been going on for quite some times...maybe because it is not a 24-7 neews frenzy this maybe why the stock market nor the price of oil been affected...you know like our radiation and oil spill do no harm. ...@Jake, I sure hope he is not lying about we would not be doing what bush did after his lying to us as our president...or are you saying he was lying when he said we had stopped using our planes in Libya...if you like, I would like to let you know where our unmanned fighters are based...they are about one mile from where I live on Beale Air force Base and you can sure check this out iwth them if you like. (smile)
For some unknown reason all of my life has been spent on or right near a major military base of some kind...(smile)

@Jake which gave you the greatest belly laugh...the one about it has helped that so many countries saw that refugees would bring harm and a lot of stress to a new forming freedom loving governments in Egypt/ tunisa or that 1000s of American lives had not been lost (no thsis would make those who feel about our president as you do cry not be in a happy mode) and a $trillion spent although the Bush administration paid not one cent for his years and years of middle-east wars?...
oh lets not leave out what may have been the best laugh about those more than $30 billions that would be returned to the citizens of Libya who they really belong to that not just him was halding in his private piggy bank?????
