Kids and Online Safety: Get the Tools and Learn How to Use Them. (264 hits)
As you know, the internet offers students a wealth of opportunities to communicate, socialize and explore the world. But these benefits come with risks. Problems like cyberbullying, s*xting and over-sharing on social networking sites affect students, schools and communities across the country.
The Federal Trade Commission – the nation’s consumer protection agency – and its partners in the www.OnGuardOnline.gov project produced the Net Cetera Community Outreach Toolkit to help you reach people with important information about helping kids stay safe online. The toolkit includes Net Cetera, a guide for parents; Heads Up, information for kids; presentation slides and notes; videos for parents and for kids; and ideas to help you spread the word about being safe online, with practical information about cyberbullying, texting, file-sharing and using mobile phones. All the materials are in English and Spanish on the enclosed CD and DVD.
The toolkit materials are free and in the public domain. We encourage teachers, parents and others who care for kids to use this resource during a classroom presentation, community gathering or PTA meeting, and to spread the word by using the information in a newsletter or on your website, ordering free copies of Net Cetera and Heads Up for your neighborhood school from bulkorder.ftc.gov, or sharing the toolkit with colleagues and community leaders.
We hope you’ll take a look at the toolkit at www.Onguardonline.gov/netcetera, and contact us at OnGuardOnline@ftc.gov if you have any questions. Thank you!
Thanks very much for this really informative blog and video. I posted something similar a week ago in the news section on protecting our children from internet predators, but I really like the information in this blog. My 5 year is really computer savvy so I need to really start talking to him about online media and cyber bullying.
