Linguistic Profiling, African American English Origin, Gullah (1386 hits)

Linguistic profiling is when (persons) are discriminated against on the basis of perceived dialect. The clip briefly discusses the linguistic profiling research of John Baugh and discusses one theory on the origins of African American English. The theory here is the creolist view. Other views include (1) substratist view, (2) dialectologist (or Anglicist) view, (3) settler principle view, (4) founder principle view.
There is also a brief mention of Gullah, a creole language spoken by the descendents of slaves off the coasts of South Carolina and Georgia. Since there wasn't much on Gullah--- I found some other information at the links below. It's a very interesting language.

Nonsense people are attacking Ebonics at every turn. What about Spanlish? Hispanics kids born in this country have created a combination of Spanish and English that their stuck up parents attest to. But it's no different amongst Blacks whom we have this old generation of lingering fools whom down Ebonics at every turn although it's the language most preferred amongst younger Blacks. It's just stupid to go against change if you are too old to change then you are headed towards death.

[beCAUSE of the accent and the use of STANDARD ENGLISH...these area the people who live near the Canadian boarder, the New Jersey state boarder and all of those in the state in between these two places are so totally different in the way they talk.]

I concur with you because of personal experience. When I relocated from S.C. to NY then to NJ, I had a time with the accents and vice versa. Many northerns poked fun at my 'southern draw' so often that I questioned whether or not I was still speaking english. Let's not start talking about the Canadian way of pronouncing words. ((Lol))

[I have a slight accent,]

Brother Derek I'm sure this will depend on where you travel in the world. When I traveled to Canada, I never knew how much of an accent I really had. People would say, "So you are American, eh?"

[It's just stupid to go against change if you are too old to change then you are headed towards death.]

Again I ask ---Why so much passion Brother John? ((Lol))

i SPEAK PASSIONATELY CAUSE THAT'S WHO i AM. i'M DON'T SEE NO REASON TO BE AGAINST EBONICS OR EVEN FOR IT. I SIMPLY SEE IT AS CHANGE THAT COULD BE EITHER GOOD OR BAD DEPENDING HOW YOU ACCEPT IT. BUT i AM FIRMLY AGAINST PEOPLE CALLING OTHER PEOPLE STUPID BECAUSE OF THE USE OF SUB LANGUAGE, THAT'S HAPPENS EVERYWHERE.THAT'S WHY THE WORLD IS FULL OF SOME MANY LANGUAGE. OLD PEOPLE NEED TO STOP BEING SO RIGID.

Sister Irma,
You are respected and admired deeply here. Brother John is a bit passionate about things he feels rather strongly about, but I seriously doubt that he would be disrespectful to you face to face. It's always easier to say things when you're not face to face with someone, but it's a different story when you're looking someone in their 'eyeballs'. ((smiles))

Hey somthing interesting I found on wikipedia... Did you guys know "Children are able to take on accents at a fast rate; children of traveling families, for example, can change their accents within a short period of time. This generally remains true until a person's early twenties,[1] after which, a person's accent seems to become more entrenched"..... But all the same accents may not be fixed in adulthood and people can change them as well. I guess this would account for the comedians who can impersonnate people.

Hi Mozell.(smile) (thanks Jen)I only have an innocent question and a statement about a self check I would like us to make...

HAVE ANY OF YOU EVER WATCH THE FOOD NETWORK?

If you have then tell your self that it is true how you understand even a little of what Paula Deen is saying and she is not even African-American. She has a hit show, a magazine and is often a guest in the mass media.(smile)

Do you believe that this woman who such a heavy accent, has no great school learning and raised her sons alone as a mom who a lot of times did not have food for her children should have had the mass media saying , even when it is not necessary, that her two sons were going to grow up to be the scum of the earth because she was raising them alone...

..............................AND IF NOT, THEN WHY NOT?!?!?!!!!!!!?

And in defence of all "Americans" I offer this little tidbit...A person born and raised in a state say N.Y. are going to have a very hard time understanding what each other are saying, beCAUSE of the accent and the use of STANDARD ENGLISH...these area the people who live near the Canadian boarder, the New Jersey state boarder and all of those in the state in between these two places are so totally different in the way they talk.(smile)

John , do you mane people my age who refuse to not treat others as I want to be treated. but, then all people have an idea of the actual ideas of right, wrong a violent or a non violent person. as I like to give examples here is one...I doubt if you or my child (as I am her mother) and my grandchild (her daughter) would be no difference than I do hope you will be. If you and I were face to face and you said the things to me or about me that you do then I would only pity you and let it go...but my daughter and my grandaughter who has never been in any contact with the law even for jaywalking will end up on death row if you talked to me and they were able to be in the same space as you and I ...and I do pray that all of our young people would learn to see respect is such an important part of our culturebecause it damands l they value their elders...we still hold the same values (some of us) for our elders especially our females because they are the mother figures and should always be respected as we respect our selves...but then in America so many of us now believe in the old folk homes and not what they can teach us by way of life's experiences...or that if we live we do grow older each year...but, to each their own I guess I am still not ready to live or to die not proud of all I still pocess the teaching of race unity that we brought from the Mother Land...the survival of my race so the I never find any thing wrong about the color of my skin or my race came here as nonhumans...As for me, I wish you a long and happy life.(smile)
