My Thoughts Re: Mr. Pitts' open letter to black women ( what makes you beautiful ) (691 hits)
I don't know about ya'll, but I'm getting pretty annoyed with some of the brothas feeling the need to try and lecture Black women. It seems that (some not all) brothas have gotten over inflated egos and need to be taken down a notch or two. I read Mr. Pitts' (well meaning) commentary and I felt insulted just a bit, because I felt it was something he should have written for his wife and daughters. If Black women want to go natural, relaxed, weaved, or with braids; I think it is our prerogative and none of Mr. Pitts business unless of course he's PAYING FOR IT.
Obviously Mr. Pitts and many of the brothas are in denial, because when was the last time you heard of a brotha beating down a Black woman's door when she had a kinky natural? African men appear to be more appreciative of natural kinky hair than the brothas do. I say to Mr. Pitts and the rest of the brothas who feel the need to tell us what makes us beautiful --- to keep your 2 cents to yourself.
As a lover of the sisterhood, I absolutely ADORE and ADMIRE the natural look. Although, I appreciate Black women w/straight hair, too, I especially appreciate sisters who don the natural a lot more.
While most men want to 'run' their fingers 'through' a woman's hair, I'd much rather 'rub' and 'grab' ... if you get my drift. ;]

Hello Jen,
I read Mr. Leonard Pitts commentary. Perhaps I may be wrong, but I believe that what he is saying is that Black women who are descendents of slaves are beautiful just sporting their natural hair, but groomed and styled of course.
I believe that it will take many years, psychologically speaking for our particular race to cultivate ourselves to see that we are beautiful people, especially when we become a sovereign people. Our self-made wealth as a sovereign and completely independent people would help us to take out of the earth the products necessary to enhance our natural beauty.
Perhaps if we had absolute control over our lives we could research to find natural products to make our skin, our feet, our toes, our fingers etc. beautiful that we ourselves would not take our eyes off each other.
Perhaps if we had absolute control over ourselves we could research foods that would make us beautiful as well as healthy. There are many things to our benefits and advantage once we become free of our subjugation in White America to advance and enhance the quality of our lives across-the-board.
Anyway, I agree with Mr. Leonard Pitts. He wants Black women to know that they are naturally beautiful. Because of the lives, that we live as we are growing up things happens to us unfortunately that takes away from our beauty.
Now, have I misinterpret the gist of Mr. Pitts’ commentary? Please correct me if I have.
You guys are really hilarious especially you Brother Craig. Brother Steve you were right and thanks Brother Harry for clarifying Mr. Pitts' point of view (but I still feel he should have kept his 2 cents to himself). Brother Rob your commments leave me scratching my head & saying 'what' mainly because your comments keep going over my head. ((lol)) Sister Irma I think I will have to have you help me by translating Brother Rob's comments on these blogs. I'm a Gen Xer.
Black women in a positive sense of speaking are the property of Black men as all women are to their respective mate.
If you notice Black women are innately concerning about being notice by a man. She is concerned if her counterpart would like something about how she dressed herself. These are clues that her mental psychology acknowledges that her counterpart is superior to her without her consciously giving her consent.
Slavery has severely damaged the chemistry of our minds of both genders.
I could recall an incident when I was in Texas working alongside some Mexicans. This Mexican began to talk about how he was screwing this Black girl and how ignorant she was. He said he would never marry her. The Mexican man expressed with pleasure how inhumane he was treating her. I was friends with them before and after hearing this episode. However, when the Mexican turned to me for my approve of his actions I told him that if I had anything to do with it and could catch him crossing the railroad tracks coming to see the Black girl he would never forget what I would put on his ass. From that day for they had a different understanding about me while their outlook of the other Black men did not change. They saw Black men as stupid since they did not hear about their own women. In fact, I was asked many of times if I was from Texas and of course I told him no. I am innately connected to this Black female. I do not need to know her personally. By nature, all I needed to know is that she is one of me that would cause the hairs on the back of my neck to rise. If you all do not understand what I am saying, God certainly does. God created all intelligent men and women as I was created as well.
For instance, in the story of Moses, Moses observed an Egyptian soldier beating the hell out of a Hebrew man and he went to the aid of the Hebrew and happened to kill the Egyptian soldier in the heat of the incident, which caused him to flee from Egypt for his own life. At the time he was a prince in Pharaoh’s court, nevertheless, Moses was born a Hebrew. Now, what caused Moses to go to the aid of the Hebrew man?
I must say that you all have some of the most ignorant and intelligent conversations when it comes to the respect for yourselves.
Jen, the silliness of the female experience in america caused you to post this Blog. for 550 years female beauty as defined by europeans has caused the slavefemale to question her beauty compared to ms. blond long hair. you dont need an interpreter to go farther than that.
my post concerns my solution to the slavewomens "hair' issues----do like your ancestors in Africa do---Not like your european examples force you.
a piece of beautiful cloth on a womans head is better than some Hair---from a jackass or horse extension.
I do agree with your rationale to Jen and Iram

Sister Jen, I used to braid my wife's hair for her after she became unable to do it herself. That was how she wanted it, and yes, she did look gorgeous in public.

Really Brother Steve? ((smiles)) You wouldn't be surprised to know how therapeutic hair braiding and massaging a woman's scalp is. My aunt had me scratch her scalp and oil her scalp when I was a child. She always went to sleep without fail. I'll have to ask her if she has any of the younger kids participating in the ritual. ((Lol))

[..., you just brought back a cute memory of how my mother-in law could not braid hair but her husband could braid hair.]
Sister Irma I can't braid hair and this is one of the reasons I vowed to have only boys. I'm only kidding --- but I do braid a little, but I can not produce decent cornrows, french braids, or fish braids. There are so many names for the braiding styles that my head spins thinking about it.
Sister Jen, all this is is about females who no longer accept being treated as property...you are from the generation when women had found out it is alright to love themselves therefore they could do more than have babys, (the personal male's) maids and cooks.(smile)
You go girl, because as a nurse, I know you are better for/with the patient than the M-A-L-E(role) doctor of my day.LOL

robert, one day you will (maybe)learn how the black female slave had more rights and freedoms to be respected by the master than his white wife.(smile)More back then that is some instances of the 21st century(smile)
All that is need for this is never accepting a SUBSERVANT ROLE IN LIFE.LOL

Steve, you just brought back a cute memory of how my mother-in law could not braid hair but her husband could braid hair. He was the oldest child with sisteers and she always had others to braid her hair.(smile)M, my older cousin use to braid my hair most of the time...and the memory of this is why I will not allow a buety shop to put braids in my hair they do it too tight...
