When I was growing up in Kenya, I must have heard all sorts of proverbs from my family members. I always wondered why everyone was so complicated. For example in my culture, there is a requirement that if you make the child come into contact with dirt, you have to then bathe the child. This is spoken figuratively. Simply put, if you go and spread false rumors about someone , based on false evidence you have to remedy the situation .You do that by acknowledging your mistake, asking the victim for forgiveness and also proactively setting the record straight about the person whom you maligned or assassinated his character.
Its not just enough for you to acknowledge that you will set the record straight about the person who you lied about, you have to aggressively and purposefully do so in public so as to wash the persons character to restore their reputation in the eyes of their society. In my culture character assassination is a serious as rape. The whole logic behind this line of thinking is that, one has to be real careful about what they say when it comes to speaking about someone else especially when by doing so, this will result in the other persons public humiliation.
We believe that when you invoke a spirit of character assassination on another person it adversely affects you and that when the truth is finally revealed your punishment ought to be swift and appropriate. What if you had to provide some with free public relations services in public as a means of restitution to your victim because you were wrong. This is what we call bathing the child, because in our culture, your victim whom you have injured by assassinating their character is innocent. In this justice system they are perceived as a child because they have suffered from public humiliation and have no way of restoring their reputation because of the actions of someone else. In other words it is as if they were already dead and couldn't defend themselves. Because we all know that its easier to tell a lie about someone than it is to tell the truth about someone. A lie will spread like wildfire while the truth will take forever to reach the same people.
How does this relate to network marketing? Being a straight shooter, I don't like innuendo and insinuations. I don't have the patience for long stories that do make sense that send my mind in all sorts of tangents only to get frustrated tyring to understand some cryptic saying that may or may not make sense. If you read the heading of this article, you probably want to know how bathing the child relates to network marketing. In this experience called network marketing, we all experience the euphoric highs , when we are making money because we are recruiting people left right and center and those residual income checks are hitting the mailbox. When you live in an advanced society like America, you tend to become complacent and sick with the entitlement disease. Everyone feels like they are entitled to something and everyone is so easily offended. Everyone is quick to blame someone else for their own mistakes. If you are in a sales person of any kind then you can relate to what I am saying. Its always someone else's fault, they didn't teach me, they didn't do this , they didn't do that and because of that ...... I am now justified in doing whatever I want to do.
Many people who are involved in network marketing do not understand that there is a human element to this business. There are those on the other hand who take the make everyone a friend thing and become the prom king or queen thing too far. I love realistic people who are not extremist in their thought patterns. Back to bathing the child, how does bathing a child come into play when talking about network marketing? In my culture there is a strong belief in the concept of restitution. Please do not be offended when I say that I am not talking about 40 acres and a mule. Far from it , its not that I am insensitive to any racial groups sufferings, what I am talking about here is more than just material stuff. In my culture if you go out and cast aspersions on someones character, you have to make sure that you are absolutely sure that you are saying the truth.
In my culture we frown on character assassination. So far this might sound like I am digressing from my premise but if you can hang in there with me for a second, you will soon be able to understand what I am talking about. Stay with me. In network marketing your character is thoroughly , from how you talk to people , how your actions communicate your intent. If you are only trying to get people into your team to make a quick start up bonus it will show. And people will run away from you.
Now when that happens , two things are going to happen. Either people are going to be turned off because you have communicated to them that you are a money hungry salesman or your down line will start dropping off because they will feel like they were tricked into some financial commitment . Ask yourself, would you like to be the on who is making these monthly payments on a product or service that others are not willing to buy or sell from you? If you can answer that question, then how do you expect your team members to answer that question in good conscience and continue spending money on you faithfully on a monthly basis? The consequence of greed is loss of sales, and team members. When that happens, who do you blame? Do you blame your sponsor? Do you blame the product? Do you blame the service? The truth is that in most cases most people take the easy option of blaming their sponsor for their failure in network marketing. They even take it a step further to malign and assassinate these individuals character.
At the end of the day only you can account for your own actions. People ask me why I always look at network marketing through my african cultural lens, the truth is, I cannot help it. I was raised that way and fact is, network marketing is ultimate customer service business. If you don't know how to talk to people you will not do well in this business, regardless of how many lead generation websites you have. At some point in time you have to talk to people over the phone or in person.
How many network marketers have you met that go around spreading lies about their sponsors and kill their character at the same time. When in reality they are not making any money because they are not putting an effort in the business. I used to do it too, until I discovered that I was responsible for my own results. Because I profess the character restitution doctrine, I had to reprimand myself severely, because I had no business whining and complaining while the truth was that I had the ability to change my own condition but I didn't chose to exercise that authority. Because of my strong belief in the concept of character restitution, I was forced to confess what I had done to my sponsor, I was forced to ask for their forgiveness and then turn around and set the record straight about their character. Why is this important in network marketing? As a man thinks so is he. If you attract negative energies and entertain negative thoughts you get negative results.
For every time you complain about your products that you are selling, you are killing your business. For every time you complain about the services that you are offering , you are killing your business. For every time you complain about your sponsor, you are killing your business. Unless you bathe the child in you, by this I mean your attitude, and how you think about your business, you will not succeed.
Complaining and grumbling leads to character assassination, character assassination breads envy, envy breads contempt and contempt leads to complacency. All those qualities are currency in network marketing. You don't hear Donald Trump or Robert Kiyosaki talking negatively about their mentors and people who work for them. If they don't do it, why are you doing it. I have never heard Tim Sales , Traci Biller , Mike Dillard , Doug Firebuagh , David Frey or any other top sales professional disrespect their mentor, sponsor, products or services that they are affiliated with. That is because they have a stake in what they do. Don't you think its time you did the same with your network marketing business?
