What can I do as an accountant cont..../Part Five (345 hits)
So here I am now. A woman that's making it. Life has been good. But like anyone I sometimes wonder what if certain things didn't happen would I be where I am at. Throughout my career I have had the question asked if I was serious about accounting. If it was something I just got into because I woke up one morning and thought this is what I'll do. I used to be offended. I often wondered how dare them question my integrity or sincerity. Who are they that I should prove myself to them? This is something God has prepared me for all my life. So to question it would be to question God and who are they to do that? Am I going crazy because this is stuff people shouldn't insinuate net alone ask. But then I realized that sometimes people are just curious because I don't fit a mold. My lot wasn't handed to me from generations before me because they were refused. Times are different now but I remain eternally grateful to all who perservered, gave up their wealth, security and comfort for people like me and for the those coming into the field now.
For me denial was just a generation away. What if the 60's didn't happen. I tell my girls all the time they should be grateful that they can wake up today and decide what they want to be and not be judged or made to feel ashamed or unworthy for their choice and/or afterthought of it. Because I have been judged, I have been questioned but unlike those before me I have not been denied.
I often wondered how could a people go through slavery, Jim Crow, Institutional Separation and then the separation that goes on within themselves and stay strong and beautiful. How did the little girls make it when they knew their momma was raped and daddy was beaten and they had no one to tell. Or the little boys who saw the same thing and could do nothing about it. Where did they get their stregnth? You hear of people killing themselves left and right nowadays because of the economy. But how many slaves or Jim Crow survivors did you hear about killing themselves. Where did they get their strength? God has shown me that His opinion is the one I should listen to if I need one. It is His judgement that I should go to if I need to know what others think of me. It is His light that I should carry. It is His strength that I should hold on to. Because that is how they made it.
I have since realized some of the things that I can do as an accountant.
1. I can hold my head high because there is no shame to my game. 2. I can possess integrity because I have more to lose and more to prove than most others. 3. I don't have to live in a box or be shaped from a mold I am beautiful just as I am. 4. If I don't want to I don't have to prove anything. My proof is in me and it shows in all I do. 5. I can be more than a baby momma. 6. I can be better than you. Don't hate cause you can also be better than me. And I'll love you for it. 7. I can have a strong meaningful relationship with all sisters because we need to get rid of the cat, pull in the dogs, and clean house. 8. I can have financial security. 9. And most importantly I CAN BE A DAMMED GOOD ACCOUNTANT BECAUSE I BELIEVE I CAN BE.
May God Bless all who read this. For I know He has blessed me.
I am an accountant too who made a career change. Keep believing what you believe because at end of the day it only you have to satifyh. Just be the best you, you can be and continue pushing and challenging yourself. Because there will be someone out there who will.
