Security Breech at the University of Rochester Reported by: WROC TV Saturday, Jan 10, 2009 @11:08pm EST
There has been a security breech at the University of Rochester.
The names and Social Security numbers of approximately 450 University of Rochester students and former students were accessed and copied illegally from a non-academic student database in recent weeks. Nothing else was copied.
The investigation is on going. All of those affected by the breech have been sent an e-mail notifying them of the situation. They will also be sent a letter through the post office.
"We are dedicated to the integrity of our information systems and to reducing the potential for risks of identity theft for our current and former students," said University Provost Ralph Kuncl. "We have alerted the FBI, the New York State Attorney General, the Consumer Protection Board, and the Office of Cyber Security. Our network security staff have taken immediate, concrete steps to minimize the chances of this happening again."
The U of R is paying for credit protection, credit monitoring and insurance for a year for all of those involved. The breech happened on January 7th and the U of R has been working since then to solve the problem.
Exactly when and how personal information was copied from the non-academic student database is under investigation. This database has been taken off-line.
