A native of Jackson, MS, Nicholas Turner has created a dynamic independent record label out of Columbus, GA. He is a business man with a much bigger plan for up and coming artists. He has a passion for music and an equal passion to help his artists gain their own spotlight. I was fortunate enough to get an exclusive interview with the owner of 1st Family Entertainment:
Decovia: What led you to start your own label? Nicholas Turner: My family is full of talent as far as putting music together. My dad has been one of the top blues DJ’s in Mississippi for years. My little brother is one of the top band members for Jackson State University. For years I went back and forth about a label. I lost my son on March 1, 2008 and that really made me want to live life to the fullest while I still have it. So I jumped in head first.
Decovia: What artists make up 1st Family Entertainment? Turner: Lil Buddie, The Therapist- The youngest in the camp. Future of female Hip-Hop Lil Range- Mellow, laid back and super cool. Lil Cuz- The future of cocaine music Truf- Colorful lyrics, animated with his word play J-Lady- Harder than Trina and colder than Shawnna GT- Sick swag, and he’s hungry for the music. Nicodon- Leader of the pack.
Decovia: Is there a particular sound coming from 1st Family Ent.? Turner: “Country Rap” tunes, music for the street, and a mellow twist with the boy Lil Range.
Decovia: Do you have a common goal for your artists? Turner: For them to be as successful as possible. My artists are not meant to stay independent artist for a long period of time. They’re getting ready for the majors. I want them to understand the business and grow as business people. I want them to be label owners.
Decovia: What projects should we be on the look out for? Turner: Family Affair Vol. 1. Solo music from Truf, Lil Range, Lil Buddie, J-Lady, Lil Cuz, and GT. Group projects will include an all female project, and Universal Trapper which include Lil Cuz and myself.
Decovia: Any last words for the people? Turner: Of course, I would like to thank God first and foremost. And I can’t forget Beatdown Productions, BeEasy Entertainment, MLD Entertainment, and Frontstreet Entertainment
The streets are defiantly feelin’ the music coming form 1st Family Entertainment and the best is yet to come. Nicholas Turner is also the president of Coalition Forces which consist of six independent record labels. With Mr. Turner standing behind them, these artists are bound to reach their full potential.
