Head of Upper School Science
Chapin?s Department Heads serve as stewards of the School?s Academic Program, providing leadership informed by recent developments in their fields. Department Heads collaborate with faculty, Division Heads, and the Director of Academic Program to develop curriculum and enhance teaching and learning practices, seeking to improve the student learning experience, in alignment with Chapin?s mission.

In the classroom, Chapin?s Department Heads exemplify the qualities they seek to develop in the faculty, ensuring that content and pedagogy reflect current research. The Department Head reports to the Division Head and works closely with the Director of Academic Program to ensure vertical alignment of Chapin?s K-12 curriculum.

The Head of Upper School Science is responsible for

leading the professional growth and support of department members.

developing a program of study that inspires students, cultivating a commitment to excellence and a love of science.

collaborating within the department and across the K-12 school for a shared vision and cohesive progression of Science education.

envisioning and executing integrated learning opportunities across disciplines.

teaching two sections of Upper School science and serving as an Upper School advisor.

fosters a collaborative, inclusive culture though well-planned meetings that address both administrative requirements and meaningful pedagogical exchange.

ensures that department members understand and follow the academic and social policies and regulations of the School.

a master teacher who demonstrates a commitment to innovation and interdisciplinary curriculum development by

leading annual curriculum reviews to ensure vertical continuity,appropriateness of content, skills, and assessment, and program alignment with NGSS standards.

promoting a culture of scientific thinking for all learners by staying current with science education research and fostering a genuine passion for student discovery.

a student-centered educator who values each student?s voice, experience, and history by

employing diverse teaching strategies guided by an understanding of adolescent development to ensure all students, including those with learning differences, can thrive.
an educator who actively cultivates a classroom and community of belonging by

cultivating a culture of innovation by modeling and advancing inclusive teaching practices throughout the department.

critically examining departmental practices and policies to ensure they are equitably designed and applied.

a partner to students, colleagues, and parents who

engenders respect from the community in their reliability, sincerity, and competence while upholding high standards for themselves and the department.

prioritizes clear, consistent communication with students, families, and colleagues.

How to Apply

Candidates must submit a current r?sum? and the committee will consider applications on a rolling basis.

Compensation will be commensurate with experience. The range is $75,000-$130,000 annually.
Qualifications & Requirements
Qualifications

Bachelor?s degree in science or related field; Master?s degree preferred.

A minimum of 5-7 years of experience teaching science to high school students.

Leadership and supervision of colleagues that includes coaching, mentoring, and creating professional development opportunities.
