We consume so much sugar in our diets daily that we have literally become addicted to it. Eating sugary sweets and processed carbohydrates like white bread, white flour, pasta and rice in large portions causes there to be a sugar rush in the bloodstream. In addition to that rush, our arteries spasm as a result of the presence of high glycemic foods in our system. This reaction in the body is the precurser to the chronic illnesses (diabetes, heart disease, etc.) that is rampant in the black community.
To break the addiction to sugar and high glycemic foods, there is a process that must be followed that includes weaning off of those foods and incorporating low glycemic foods in our diets. Foods such as cauliflower, beans, asparagus, apples, oranges, and grapes release their sugars slowly in the bloodstream and do not cause a sugar rush. Another added bonus to these low glycemic foods is that they also have fiber with is great for the digestive system.
