Really, WHY is high fructose corn syrup bad for you?
I just finished watching a commercial put out by the Corn Refiners Association, which revealed that they are not too happy about the messages the public is receiving about high fructose corn syrup. The commercial basically dismisses the criticism by stating that it's a sweetener made from corn, a vegetable that is loved by many.
Well, there are few things to know about high fructose corn syrup (HFCS):
1. the epidemic of obesity, heart disease and diabetes in our society has been linked to the increased presence and consumption of processed foods that are made with HFCS
2. HFCS is a man-made sweetener that is made from the chemical synthesization of corn
3. It's cheaply made, and cheaper for manufacturers to buy than sugar
4. Any product made with HFCS that calls itself natural is not, by virtue of the manner in which HFCS is processed
5. truthfully, it is no worse than eating table sugar in what it does to blood sugar levels
Bottom line: keep sweeteners at a minimum. In my next blog, I'll go into why, what sugars/sweeteners and high glycemic foods (huh?) do to the body when they are consumed.
