Well, Grants are long and it can take up to four years for one to actually go through. I AM NOT trying to discourage you, just giving you a realistic outlook. Grants are great and if you can obtain one, all the better.
First of all, do you have a business plan? Your business plan should outline general things like the name of your business, location of the business and whether or not you will operate as an LLC, or Corporation. Your business plan should also tell potential investors what it is that you will do.
You said that you and your friend are starting a consulting business.
What is your credit score?
What kind of business is it; particulary?
What will you consult on?
What is your level of education?
How much experience do you have in the area of consulting?
What are you projecting the business will earn within the first five years of operation?
If you have loans, how will you pay them down and what is the interest rate or expected interest rate?
If you are looking for investors, what is the percent of ownership that you are giving in consideration for the investment?
If doing percent ownership, how will you use the money that an investor gives you?
Will investor dollars be used for the initial build-out (if you're building the business from the ground up? Will they be used for initial operating expenses i.e. first month's Gas & Electric bill, phone bill, employees etc...?
IF YOU CAN"T ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS THEN YOU ARE NOT READY TO OPEN A BUSINESS.
I applaud the young entreprenuer in you. I would like to help you further if you need it. My first book "Life Goal Success" is all about starting a Corporation on $2.13 an hour (which is what I made as the single mother of two waiting tables for twelve years).
The book will be released on November 21st 2008 and I would be more than happy to send you a copy (FREE OF CHARGE). It has very useful resources inside and shows you how I was able to do it and how you can to. IT IS NOT A QUICK OVERNIGHT SUCCESS GUIDE.
It takes hard work and determination to achieve your goals and that is how the book is written. If you would like more help and assistance let me know and I will get back to you.
I wish you the best of luck. Be blessed and successful but do it the right way.
What a blessing you are for laying it out there for the sister, saving her time, money and possible hardship !Your advice is worth its weight in gold. Good looking out I couldn't have said it better.Another thing to add is.... are you going to enjoy providing the services you plan to offer over time? And, having a partner is just like a marriage. Thanks for sharing !
Yes, we are going to enjoy what we are doing because we both got our signs that this is what we were supposed to be doing. After providing career placement, we are also going to add additional services to help the community as well, such as, providing resume writing assistance, interview skills development & prep, and offer higher learning scholarships, so that we can better prepare our fellow minorities for the job market. Also my best friend and I have been friends for 7 years, we NEVER had a fight/argument and we always get along. Ever since we decided to go into business together, we have the SAME ideas, thoughts and even sometimes say the same things, which is crazy! After she got her confirmation that getting into this business is what she was supposed to do, I started to wonder because, I didn't have a sign and I also didn't want to enter in this with her, if I wasn't commited to it, because that would affect our friendship, but GOD gave me my sign and I couldn't think of any other person, besides her to do this with! I think....as a matter of fact, I KNOW that we will work GREAT together. WE ALWAYS HAVE & WE ALWAYS WILL!
Great ! Wherever two or more has come togther, so is God among them. Blessings to you both !!!
Thank you
