There is a new book for young black girls called Black Girls Can: An Empowering Story of Yesterdays and Todays. It features ten prominent, trail-blazing Black women who parallel today’s girl. The book demonstrates that Black girls like us CAN and DO! We can create like Madam C.J. Walker, be brave like Rosa Parks, and inspire like Michelle Obama.

The author of this book wrote it because she believes that young Black girls shouldn’t be excluded from learning our history and gaining inspiration and insight. Most Black history books are written for older children, and many of these books exclude some very important women! Not only is this book educational, but it’s beautiful! The illustrations are bright and engaging, keeping our attention from “once upon a time” to “happily ever after.”
