The top seed Serena Williams took only 49 minutes to dispose of the South African Chanelle Scheepers in the second round on Court No1.

Following her shock early exit in the French Open, the 32-year-old looked totally focused and impassive as she went through with a 6-1, 6-1 victory. The most pressure she was under was when she was 15-30 on her serve but it once again appeared her most destructive weapon.

Williams, the five-times champion who is going for her 18th grand slam title to draw level with Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert, looked even more ruthless than in her first-round victory that took 61 minutes.

She seemed to have no after-affects following her late doubles match on Wednesday evening, when she slipped and fell into the front row of the crowd.

Scheepers lost her first service game and never looked to have any chance after that. She was overpowered 6-1 in the opening set in just 25 minutes. The second set was even shorter. It was only when she used her backhand that the South African occasionally troubled the multiple champion. Williams will now face France’s Alizé Cornet in the third round.
