Feb 5, 2014 By Tracy Scott. Mary Jane Paul, the fictional career woman of BET’s “Being Mary Jane,” is a proud mistress who explained to her lover’s wife why she’s satisfied being No. 2…for now. “I’ve found that being No. 2 gives you all the glory of being at the top without all the pressures of the No. 1 spot. See, the job of any great No. 2 is to figure what No. 1 is missing, what they refused to see and what they are doing wrong,” MJ said in a crowed full of professional women, including her lover’s wife. “Take your time, learn, be patient, get better. You will get to where you’re supposed to be if you do the work,” she said.

Though she offered the words under the premise of career advice, “BMJ” viewers picked up on the fact that Mary Jane, played by Gabrielle Union, was explaining why she believed her married man would eventually leave his wife. Followers at Twitter.com/S2Smag didn’t exactly agree with MJ’s logic, pointing out that once she theoretically arrived where she’s “supposed to be,” she’d then have to take on all those responsibilities that often turn marriages into more work than play. As the episode closed, it seemed Mary Jane might have been right, as her “boyfriend” Andre declared that he’d filed for divorce, something statistics prove is rare for a husband and father to do.
