BABYSteps for Life Challenge - Feb 8-12, 2010 - Celebrate Your Love For People

Chantay Hunter Wickliffe · Tuesday, February 9th 2010 at 2:14AM · 928 views
This month, we are celebrating the food, people, places and things that we love. Last week we celebrated the foods we love, this week we will celebrate the people that we love. We've strategically placed "people" the week before Valentine's Day.

(We celebrate Valentine's Day because of St. Valentine (though he is not recognized as a Saint). He was priest who, when told that no marriages should be performed disagreed, performed them anyway and was arrested and executed. His last words were in the form of a love note, signed: Your Valentine. Valentine’s refusal to not let love die, even under the risk of death becomes the foundation for our celebration).

Your challenge this week is to Celebrate your love of people.
Below, we offer some suggestions for those celebrating Valentine's Day solo or with a loved one.

1. Celebrate YOU. If you are facing Valentine's Day alone, be sure to celebrate Y-O-U. Here are some suggestions:

Find an uninterrupted hour of time to catch back up on your reading
Visit a spa for a treatment or a mani/pedi.
Cook an elaborate dish for yourself, or go out to eat (go before the 13th/14th to make sure you get a seat, take a book if you don't think you'd be comfortable sitting solo in a restaurant.)
Make it an evening with bubble bath, a favorite movie, a food you love.
Have a girl's night out
Have a girl's night in
If you have a daughter, dress up and take her out to dinner
Do something you have always wanted to do - start a project, sign up for a class.
Act like it's your birthday and buy yourself something special or schedule a vacation.
Do something to show your love for people (see below).

There's nothing wrong with doing things solo, so have at it! Above all, enjoy yourself.

2. Celebrate your someone special. If you are celebrating with that special someone, do something to really show your creativity and your love. We have some ideas to add to your already great ideas:

Create a scavenger hunt that ends in the bedroom.
Take a romantic balloon ride.
Be a servant for a day (wait on your loved one for a day-this includes washing the clothes, doing the dishes, rubbing the feet!)! Only do this if you are not the one that normally does. You will be surprised how much this means.
Record your story together with pictures and provide that to your loved one.
Make him/her a calendar of yourself. I personally do not like the idea of evidence that can make it to the National Enquirer, so will leave whether this is R or X rated up to you!
Make an arrangement of note cards with each card telling a funny or romantic (Do You Remember) story of each month or year together, with the final card given with a compatible gift on Valentine's Day.
Create a coupon book with "X" number of coupons (12 if once a month/ 26 if every other week/whatever you are comfortable with) or other number of coupons that you create outlining things that he/she likes that he/she can use whenever she wants. No blackout dates allowed!
Relax together. Take it easy. Do not do anything but communicate. When is the last time you felt like you did when you were dating? What do you need to feel like that again? If you know, stage it and go for it. You both must be open to it and you have to commit to doing it. If you do not know, now is the time to communicate and learn what to do.
Do the things on your "honey do" list.
Do something to show your love for people (see below).

3. Do something to show your love for people. Make someone or something else your Valentine (other than your special someone). Anyone can be your valentine. You don't have to buy cards for everyone in your neighborhood, but maybe select someone that doesn't have a valentine, your valentine.

Do something together with the family (game night, Dave & Busters, family cooking night - let the kids help, even the younger ones -- they can always place mats placemats out of colored paper)
Let your friends know you love them. This may be in the form of picking up the bill, getting everyone together to celebrate or meeting for desserts at a local bakery.
Make, write or buy something to demonstrate your respect, your adoration or your love for someone.
Select a charity for your valentine and donate your time or money.
Volunteer for a local organization.
Make the children in your life your valentine (your own, nieces, nephews, kids in the neighborhood, etc.) by doing something special for them.
Make your community your valentine - volunteer on a community project.
Make a senior citizen your valentine - get the groceries for your neighbor, give someone a ride that doesn't drive anymore.
Make your church your valentine - donate your time to an upcoming project.
Demonstrate random acts of kindness.
It's the time and willingness to give that is the most important, so if you can't start your project this month, just lie the foundation for it.

Whatever you decide to do, we wish you the best and we hope you sign in and comment and let us know what you will do/have done.

I decided to make the community my Valentine. I sent a basket of goodies (Mrs. Field's) to a local assisted/independent living facility for the staff. I thought about sending it for the residents, but I think the staff sometimes has a thankless job and I wanted to recognize them and say Thank You for taking care of our most treasured resources: our Seniors. I feel great about it and hope they enjoy the cookies!
