A Colorful Life
Jacqueline Wayans of the Bronx Wins National Contest
“Colorful Life”
Jacqueline Wayans of the Bronx, is a grand prize winner in the “Colorful Life” contest. A contest celebrating women who exude confidence, optimism, compassion, style and personality. The contest is sponsored by Maybelline New York in partnership with Meredith 360°, and bestselling author Candace Bushnell, one of America's most colorful authors and personalities.
10,000 women participated in the contest by writing an essay detailing what makes their lives colorful. The three Grand Prize winners Jacqueline Wayans of New York, Heidi Brady of Chicago, and Kara Forney of Phoenix were chosen because of the compelling nature of their stories.
Jacquie's winning essay follows:
As a single mom of three kids, I have faced many challenges. When I found myself alone and in poverty, things looked dark. God knows that I felt lifeless and wanted to give up. Instead, I decided to splash my life with some necessary color. With the encouragement of great people, I enrolled in The School of General Studies at Columbia University. Along with classes, I functioned as one of the commissioners on school governance evaluating mayoral control, volunteered at my church and wrote school profiles for
www.insideschools.org and co-authored New York City's Best Public School Guide. Many days looked bleak, like the day I walked from my Bronx apartment to the Columbia campus because I had no train fare. Yet, I graduated in May 2008 with a degree in Literature/Writing and a 3.4 GPA that semester. Now, I am busy self publishing a Memoir & CD package entitled, My Strength and My Song. It is my way to begin to let other mothers, women and youth know that they can make it through the impossible times. I also started Wayans Works Education Consulting to help parents navigate NYC's complex educational system and was recently elected to the Community Education Council in my son's school district. Color!
As a Grand Prize winner, Jacquie won an all expense paid trip to New York City, a $1000 shopping spree, a makeover, and a feature interview on Candace Buschnell’s webisode,The Broadroom, and much more. The webisode featuring Jacquie, Heidi and Kara debut and can be viewed at http://www.thebroadroomonline.com/jacqueli...
Jacquie said, "winning the Colorful Life award has been amazing! I am so humbled that my story touched the hearts of so many. I hope it will continue to inspire people and help them get through the hard times, like I did with the Lord's help".
