RAVELERS REST, S.C., July 21 (UPI) -- A South Carolina mother whose 14-year-old son weighs 555 pounds has been charged with criminal neglect, prosecutors said. Jerri Gray's case could lead to more criminal action against parents of dangerously overweight children, her lawyer, Grant Varner, told USA Today in a story published Tuesday.

14-year-old Alexander Deundray Draper of South Carolina had been on the run with his mother, Jerri Althea Gray. Gray had been told by a family court judge to turn her son over to the state because they determined that he "was of the weight where it was decided by medical authorities that he needed treatment that was not being provided for by his mother."
That weight is 555 pounds. According to CNN, the mother did not appear in court as ordered, "and has concealed the child."

This is insane! She can't be with the child all of the time, and if she were not to keep food in the house she would be charged with neglect. So, this is not a winning situation at all.

I agree with you Sister Michelle, but I what do you think would be a better solution for this woman and her son?

One thing is for sure, jail is NOT the solution. That child is hurting either emotionlly and/or mentally. There is a void some where in his life that food seems to fill. Food never lies to him, it never leaves him and it never disappoints him or puts him down. That is the root of the problem and once they find out what issue it is and why it came about they can work on a solution.

..."There is a void some where in his life that food seems to fill. Food never lies to him, it never leaves him and it never disappoints him or puts him down"...

Sister Cassandra that's a powerful insight. The child should definitely receive some child psychiatric counseling along with some cognitive behavioral therapy to help sort out what exactly what voids he's using food to fill or replace.

..."Ultimately, the state should strive to support this family in combatting poor health and point them to resources that can help make good health a reality"...

Sister Mwannesi this is a great solution and I wonder if this was offered to the mother.
