Re: Henry County Police Department Discrimination
Ladies, I am in need of your support. I will post a letter I sent to Mark Winne of Channel 2 News. I have contacted NAACP, Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson. I have witnessed far too many of our young African American Females discriminated against by Henry County Police Department. 2 were fired, and 2 were forced to resign.

Dear Mark,
Dr. Shirley Reams thought you might be able to assist me in a problem I am having with Henry County Police Department. First, let me tell you who I am. My name is Doris Mullins, and I am a Henry County Police Officer. I have worked with Henry County for 9 years. I was the only African American Female for approximately 5 years starting in 2000. I met with resistance at the beginning, and denied a job because I answered a question on my application truthfully. The question asked had I ever filed a lawsuit against a previous employer. I had, but due to the condition of the settlement, I was not at liberty to divulge the content of the lawsuit. My recruiter, currently Chief of Police at Lithonia Police department, stated Deputy Chief Simmons, (retired Henry County), told him without more information on my lawsuit I could not be hired. The lawsuit was over 15 years old. I called my representing attorney for the lawsuit in Houston Texas, Bennett Fisher and explained my situation to him. He called Henry County and informed them that they were in violation of the retaliation laws if they base denying employment on the lawsuit. He wrote them a letter explaining that I was unable to give them the information and that all files were shredded. Henry County hired me; however, I suffered harassment, micro management, defamation of character, denial of promotions, and fighting to keep my job. I filed several EEOC complaints in fear of losing my job. I came to Henry County from Houston Police Department in Houston Texas, with approximately 9 years of experience.
While working for Henry County, I have obtained a BS, MS, and I am currently working on my Doctorate degree. I thought if I improve myself, and work hard, I would overcome the negative perception of me and my career would advance. I was wrong.
On November 14, 2007, I was on my way to work. I attempted to miss hitting a deer, driving my car off the embankment. I suffered several muscular sprang; the most server is my neck and back. I have been under worker compensation, and on and off light duty. I attempted to return to work after the accident in January 7, 2008. I was not well enough, but felt pressure from my superiors to return. Returning to soon, further agitated my injuries, and I was forced to return to light due. I lost feeling in my right arm and leg. I started seeing the worker compensation doctors again. I went through several doctors, but I did not select any of them. I was unhappy with the treatment received. I asked my representative with ACCG to allow me to pick my own doctor, but denied the selection. Again, feeling the pressure from superiors to return to full duty, I felt I needed an attorney to work with ACCG.
Currently, suspended from work for abuse of sick days pending an investigation, I am distraught. It is a very long process, and I should probably speak with you in person regarding the transaction, which has transpired these last few days. Through the entire process, I spoke with my attorney maybe 3 times. The last three days, I have spoken with him four times. Last night, he informed me that Henry County had increased their settlement to $40,000.00. I will have not job, and not retirement. I am 51 years old with 4 years left to retire. I am still suffering from the injuries, therefore unable to apply to other police positions. My attorney also mentioned negotiating an addition 10K for my pension and the EEOC compliant currently on file. I was applaud at that statement, and the statement that prompted this email, is when he told me Henry County’s attorney stated they are looking for a way to terminate me, and they can without reason in an at will State.
Mr. Winne, there is a lot more to my situation which I have not put in this letter. I have spoken with Dan Edwards. He advised me to file a complaint with the NAACP. I have sent letters to Al Sparton, Jesse Jackson and Women in NAACP. I am desperately reaching out for help to bring justice to my situation and for those whom come to work behind me. I have witnessed other African American Females come to Henry County, with impeccable qualifications only to be fired, or forced to resign after 1 year.
I have cut my cell phone off, cutting things not of necessity, unsure of my future. You can reach me at home 770-507-5356, 404-288-6484, or I will be checking my email regularly.
