A tribute to motherhood - Happy Mother’s Day

For as long as I can remember I’ve wanted to be a mother. Some would call it maternal instinct but I call it having a good role model. My mom, Vivian one of 5 brothers and 2 sisters grew up in Mississippi. She grew up in what is known as “the village” with lots of, siblings, uncles, cousins, nephews, nieces; she had baby and child experience to boot before she ever even became a mother.

Vivian gave birth to me on December 25, Christmas day. And what a gift it was. Brand new baby, loving husband, who could ask for anything more? Well apparently, she did ask because two years and nine months later my brother was born. The two of us would grow up with strong morals and values, in a loving home, with the comfort of our small family. And Mom.

My mother never spoke to us as “babies”. She always used the type of language that she would an adult. Nothing inappropriate of course and she didn’t “treat” us like adults, she just didn’t baby us. Other adults always commented and complimented us from a young age on our vocabulary and manners. My mother (and dad of course) spent many a day trip with us, showing us all the things that the world had to offer including theater, fine arts, music, dance, and travel.

Though my mom only gave birth to two children, there were many a kid that called Vivian “mom”. Our house was where you could come and be sure that there was no drama, where someone was always willing to listen to you and where you could get a home cooked meal. Looking back I recall a friend commenting that we always at so late. To her my mother responded “That’s because I cook food dear, we don’t eat Micky D’s or KYC, we don’t have soup and sandwich night, and macaroni and cheese doesn’t come out of a box.”

Now I’m a mom. Ironically, my mother always compliments me on how good a mother I am. But I tell her I learned from the best. I don’t talk to my son like he’s a baby and consequently he has an excellent vocabulary. I cook meals at home and though sometimes its exhausting, I know what he’s getting.

Now I say this all not to brag but to simply say that we should all cherish and honor the women for whom with out them we would not be here. If you’re mother is still on this earth, you should for a moment put aside your differences, old arguments, pointless disagreements and THANK HER for bringing you into this world.

Happy Mother’s Day!
