The Reclamation of a Mother’s Social Life

I think I've got the "sip" partMany of you who have children can appreciate what a bundle of joy can do to your social life. On August 18th, 2005 my life was filled with joy when my son was born. Consequently what came with the package was sleepless nights, countless colds, depletion of slush funds, and a temporary hold on social life. Lucky mom’s and dads can occasionally slip away if they are near a modest selection of trusted friends and family who can baby sit while you go out on a date, or more likely sleep. But for the most part your “spare time” is consumed by diapers, toilet training, toys, and watching this wonderful human being grow and develop.

No one had tea at the TEAOn December 31, 2008 I did the unprecedented… I made a new years resolution. No promises to loose weight, change careers, read more books. No, my goal was to reclaim my social life, my name, my individuality. Now to a non parent this may sound selfish but for those of you who are only known as [insert your child’s name] MOM, you know what I’m talking about. When you find yourself in adult company and still using language like “I need to go peepee”, or “I’ve got an ouwee” it’s time for a change. Do you find yourself standing and rocking for no apparent reason? Then it’s time for a change!

Pick a color! This why I’ve launched my first monthly girls day. I was hesitant at first because I live in a small two bedroom apartment and I was afraid only 4 guests at a time would be able to come in and eat comfortably. But on May 2nd, I took a chance and hosted an event with 15 guests. The event kicked off early with massages provided by my friend Debbie Kelly, CMT. Around noon we started eating brunch. The menu included cheese grit cakes with shrimp ettoufette, vegetable quiche, delectable scones from Lisa’s Tea Treasures, smoked salmon and cucumber tea sandwiches, cheese and crackers, and a chocolate fondue. Once everyone had a chance to ingest some sustenance, we moved on to the wine tasting 101 class which was provided by Betty Kauffman from Wine Shop at Home www.winetastingsandmore.com . We learned the essential S’s for wine tasting which included: sight, swirl, sip, swish, and spit (hope I remembered them all). Some of us weren’t so adept at the swirl part so thank goodness I have a throw rug. And some of us might have sipped a ‘lil to much even though there was a pour bucket. And spit? Heck no, this is a classy establishment! Lastly I would be remiss if I didn’t at least set out my Mary Kay products for guests to peruse at leisure. All in all we had a fabulous time with lots of laughing, eating, drinking, and making new friends.
I am thankful for once that I’ve kept my New Year’s resolution and I hope you can join me next time.

Cheers!
