My Black

My Black

There are many shades of our blackness and its characteristics go much deeper than the surface of our skin.

My Black is different from yours, hers, or even them.
My Black is unique if only to me.
And its many facets cannot be duplicated, imitated, or repeated.

My Black is defined by me.
It’s my choice how My Black is seen.
Is it a strong, proud, admirable being…?
Or some shameful, weak, oppressive thing?

And while for the purpose of our theme, My Black refers to the color of my skin, in reality it’s important to understand that My Black could be any and almost everything. Whatever it is that could be used to hold you back, repress your dreams, or just as an excuse for the goals you didn’t attempt or reach.
That’s My Black. That’s Your Black.

You see, My Black is the thing that others might see and believe it’s why I should not, would not, and could not possible achieve.
But I beg to differ with these small-minded opinions.
My Black is the very reason that I will succeed. It’s what drives me to reach beyond my highest dreams. Not only is My Black strong, proud, and admirable, it’s resilient, confident, and down right beautiful.
It’s more than just the tint to my skin.
It’s falling down and getting up over, and over, and over again.

Yes, My Black is my skin, culture, and family history, but that’s just one part of what I’ve come to be. It’s one element to the many reflections in the mirror of my real beauty.

So, embrace your blackness, whatever that may be. Let it spur you into the midst of all that you were created to achieve. And when the lies of this world would have you believe that you don’t quite fit their beauty ideal, and your features are just a little too unusual…

Remember my sisters, Your Black is Beautiful.
