A Reflection of Black History!!!
So far this month, I have participated in an African-American Open Mic Poetry Event ( and I am scheduled for another one on the 20th!), and now I have the honor of singing the Billie Holiday hit "Strange Fruit" for another Black History event on campus! I am so excited because I love Billie Holiday even though she lived a tragic life. See, I attend a majority white college, so I feel that singing that song could possibly have them understand another part of our history.
I have only one main concern, though. All of the other performers are presenting the historic figure in an up-beat manner. I believe I am the only one who is reminding the audience that blacks experienced horrific things as well as pleasant, and I'm not sure if I should sing that particular song. I don't mind being the oddball, but I'm not sure if it would be appropriate. I just asked my mother, and she said I should do something else. I think I will, because I don't want to offend people (as she put it), but I will have to do it with my fist tight and my teeth gritting.
I just don't know.
