The Audacity of HOPE

What a monumental week! Our country has elected its first black president! As a result, I am compelled to write a few words on the subject of my feelings this week for posterity. There have been so many thoughts and feelings expressed this week by so many and there have been a multitude of conversations regarding everything from racism to religion. What does it all mean?

To me it means a great deal, but the overwhelming feeling that comes to my mind is HOPE. It’s not an original thought. It’s the same thought that was expressed by Barack Obama in his book titled, “The Audacity of HOPE.” It’s the same thought I believe that many Americans have considered since it first became clear that there was even a chance that Barak Obama could possibly win. Do we dare even “HOPE” this is possible? Now that it has happened, it doesn’t seem so audacious to have big HOPEs anymore. Has it not quickened our steps a bit? Hasn’t it made our thoughts for future promise a little deeper? Has it made us all want to “HOPE” again?

We’ve all been suffering. The rainbow sea of Obama supporters proves that we have ALL been suffering. We have walked our daily walks and looked at each other and assumed there were some of us who were not suffering. We perhaps mistakenly thought our suffering was worse than the worries of others. Sometimes we even thought the suffering was limited to those who look like us. Nothing brings people together like misfortune, pain, and suffering. Misfortune knows no skin color. Pain ignores income levels. Suffering is universal. Yet from all of this rose “HOPE”!

Now, let’s “HOPE” the unity continues beyond the suffering. Let’s “HOPE” that now that the pain has been revealed, we can feel the same promise for the future when our discomfort has been lifted. Let’s “HOPE” we don’t forget this moment. Let’s “HOPE” we look back and see this moment as the moment when the tide turned and the world changed for the better and stayed better.

God Bless

Well said Cynthia & I am very glad to have read your blog post this morning. I haven't read the "Audacity of Hope" yet, but I did read 'Letters from My Father" and I thoroughly enjoyed it. We all need to concentrate on what we have in common rather than the things that divide us.

We as Black people must stick together. Like I said, the victory is bittersweet. Racism still exist. It is going to get harder for us--WE MUST STICK TOGETHER

I'm sorry Tracy, but you are living in a Utopia. Black people have never stuck together too long on any one thing. I prefer to unite with people with a common purpose. This has brought me much success in my life and it has nothing to do with skin color. Much love to you sister.
