UNTITLED-The Funeral

That is why I always said, “Give me my flowers
so that I might smell them while I live.

Now look at them coming up the hill with flowers
in hand. I can not smell them.

They are all dressed up in their suits and dresses
standing in the rain holding bouquets of flowers
How can I smell flowers?

That is what I all ways said about US, always a
dollar late and a penny short of doing what
should have been done. How can I smell
Flowers?

I guess that I should be thankful for the kind
gesture of receiving flowers. But again, how
can I smell them?

What I wish I could do is scream, “Negro’s please,
I told y’all many times in my life to give me my
flowers while I could smell them”.

Well here I lay with dirt and piles of flowers
on top of me in which I can not see.

Now, I ask from heaven above, how can I smell
flowers if I am deceased?
