Black sorority snags exclusive Barbie doll

WASHINGTON, July 7 (UPI) -- Mattel Inc. has created the first sorority Barbie doll for Alpha Kappa Alpha, the oldest black sorority in the United States.

In honor of its 100th anniversary, the sorority will be offering limited-edition AKA Barbie dolls to the 35,000 members attending the group's biennial convention in Washington later this week, The Chicago Sun-Times reported Monday.

AKA Barbie is dressed in a pink and green evening gown with matching shoes and gold jewelry. It will sell for $50 with a portion of the profit going to the Chicago-headquartered sorority.

Members are expected to spend more than $100 million in the nation's capital during the week-long convention that begins Friday.

Alpha Kappa Alpha has inducted some 200,000 women since it was founded at Howard University in 1908.

Among the most notable members are author Toni Morrison, educator Marva Collins and actress Phylicia Rashad.

That's great. I would like to see a picture as well. Will the Barbie be available to the public?
