Virginia State University Receives $50 Million Gift From MacKenzie Scott (1233 hits)
Virginia State University is proud to announce that it has received the largest single donor gift in its 143-year history. Author and philanthropist MacKenzie Scott has gifted $50 million to the University, marking her second historic contribution to VSU in just five years.
Virginia State University will use the funds to expand its efforts to transform lives through education and continue the mission outlined in the University’s strategic plan. The gift will provide students with broader opportunities by focusing on academic excellence, innovation, and holistic student success, encompassing leadership development, experiential learning, and career readiness.
“Ms. Scott’s generosity and trust in our mission will change the trajectory of Virginia State University for generations to come,” said VSU President Dr. Makola M. Abdullah. "Her investment allows us to continue to build upon our legacy of excellence and expand our reach to more students who deserve access to a world-class education. MacKenzie Scott’s latest donation underscores her continued commitment to advancing educational equity and supporting institutions that create meaningful impact in their communities. In 2020, Scott donated $30 million to VSU as part of her national philanthropic effort to invest in Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
