The Bazelon Center celebrates 34 Years of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The ADA prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in everyday activities. Disability rights are civil rights, and the Bazelon Center continues to work to protect and advance the civil rights of adults and children with mental illnesses or developmental disabilities, in line with the mission of the ADA.

Monica Porter Gilbert, the Bazelon Center’s Policy & Legal Advocacy Attorney, was recently quoted in a Mother Jones article on Arizona’s guardianship laws. According to the article, some individuals and families enter guardianship agreements without fully understanding its consequences on things like voting rights. Although these bans go against a recent Justice Department stance, some states continue to fully ban individuals under guardianship from voting.
