The U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Apprenticeship and Office of Disability Employment Policy will host a webinar on "Expanding Opportunity: Apprenticeships for Individuals with Disabilities" on October 27 from 2:00-3:00 p.m. ET. As part of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, this webinar will share strategies that businesses and partners are using to ensure apprenticeships are welcoming for individuals with disabilities, and review practical examples from ODEP's Apprenticeship Inclusion Model initiative.

Job Developing for People with Disabilities National Online Dialogue

The "Job Developing for People with Disabilities During Times of Increased Unemployment National Online Dialogue" is open for participation through October 30. Hosted by the Office of Disability Employment Policy, it gathers information about how job developers help people with disabilities obtain Competitive Integrated Employment (CIE) during times of increased health risks and unemployment. People with disabilities, their family members, employment specialists, VR counselors, job coaches, employers, and others are encouraged to share their insights and ideas on how job developers are helping people with disabilities obtain and retain meaningful employment.

BLS Commissioner's Corner Blog

Savi Swick, Supervisory Research Analyst in the Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP), wrote a guest blog for the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Commissioner's Corner on "Increasing Access and Opportunity: Using Quality Data to Inform Evidence-Based Policy." Swick discussed the importance of credible, consistent data in research on the employment of people with disabilities. She highlighted data collection projects that ODEP, BLS, and the U.S. Department of Labor's Chief Evaluation Office partnered on for the Current Population Survey. "Today, these data provide reliable, accurate information to a range of stakeholders on a topic of critical importance to America's families and communities," said Swick. "Most significantly, they help facilitate evidence-based policymaking at the national, state, and local levels."

The Virtual Workplace

The Partnership on Employment & Accessible Technology (PEAT) convened a meeting with key stakeholders titled "The Virtual Workplace: PEAT Priorities and Next Steps." Attendees included representatives from the information technology (IT) industry, including developers and designers working on accessible emerging technologies; academic and nonprofit leaders from research institutions and organizations that set standards for accessibility; state, local, and federal IT and policy leaders; and leadership from Office of Disability Employment Policy. Participants discussed the primary challenges and opportunities surrounding employment success for people with disabilities, how they have changed since the group last met in January 2019, and what PEAT, the U.S. Department of Labor, and the technology community can do to capitalize on these opportunities to ensure that people with disabilities can use new and existing technologies.

Veteran-Related Accommodations

The Job Accommodation Network (JAN) will host a webcast on "The Top 10 Veteran-Related Accommodation Questions and Answers" on November 10 from 2:00-3:00 p.m. ET. The webcast will present solutions to the top 10 veteran accommodation questions JAN addresses regularly. Topics include service animals, communication difficulties, attendance concerns, and more. The most commonly requested veteran resources for self-employment and small business opportunities will also be featured.

Building a Future That Works

The U.S. Department of Labor hosted "Building a Future that Works," a virtual celebration of the 75th annual National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) and the 30th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act's passage. The event explored the crucial role of accessible technology in this year's NDEAM theme of "Increasing Access and Opportunity" for people with disabilities and the Labor Department's work to ensure that emerging technologies are accessible to all in the workplace. Features included insightful dialogues with thought leaders and a video showcase of innovations in communications, artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles, and more.
